The Oregon School Activities Association, or OSAA, is a non-profit, board-governed organization that regulates equitable competition amongst its members, made up of both public and private high schools. The OSAA is based in Wilsonville, Oregon.

History

Originally created in 1918 as the "Oregon State High School Athletic Association", the name changed to the "Oregon School Activities Association", or OSAA, in 1947.

Currently, the OSAA sponsors seventy-four state championships in nineteen interscholastic activities including athletics, music, and forensics and is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Starting in the 2006-07 school year the current 4 school classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A) will be divided into 6 classifications (6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A). This is pending a legal battle between school districts who oppose the new classification structure and the OSAA. *

State high school dichotomy

To do its job effectively, the OSAA divides schools up into classifications and leagues.

The first sort is done by the average daily enrollment of each member school. A 1A school has less than 116 students, a 2A has between 116 and 325 students, 3A schools have between 326 and 900 students, and the largest schools, called 4A, have 901 or more students.

After schools are separated by size, then they are divided by geography into leagues. The 4A leagues are:

  • Metro League (west suburban Portland area)
  • Southern Oregon Conference (southern Oregon)
  • Mt. Hood ( Gresham and north Clackamas County)
  • Intermountain (central and eastern Oregon)
  • Portland Interscholastic League (inner- Portland)
  • Pacific-9 League (north Willamette Valley)
  • Midwestern ( Eugene Metro area)
  • Three Rivers (south suburban Portland area)
  • Valley (central Willamette Valley)
