OpenWindows was a graphical user interface server for Sun Microsystems workstations which handled SunView, NeWS, and X Window System protocols. OpenWindows is included in Solaris 8.

History

OpenWindows started its life in the SunOS, using the SunView, followed by NeWS windowing system. Solaris 1.0 started with OpenWindows 2.0. Solaris 2.3 and above featured a standard X11R5 release of The X Window system. It was still called OpenWindows (version 3.3), but it was the X11R5 server with Adobe DPS added in. Display PostScript replaced previously used NeWS, and support for SunView was removed. It was still primarily OPEN LOOK. The Spring 1995 OpenWindows will be Motif and COSE-based. Statically linked BCP support. Solaris 7 featured OpenWindows 3.6.1 with X11R6.4 server. In Solaris 9, OpenWindows applications were removed.
