Okrug (Bulgarian: окръг; Serbian and ) is a term to denote a subnational entity in some Slavic states. Its etymology is similar to German Kreis ("circle"), in the meaning of administrative division; okrug is literally something "encircling".

Bulgaria

In subdivisions of Bulgaria, okrugs, translated as districts or counties, were a subdivision of the larger oblasts that existed between 1987 and 1999.

Russia

In Subdivisions of Russia, the term is either translated as district or rendered directly as okrug, for the following types of subdivisions:

• • Federal District (Okrug) for federalny okrug, as in Siberian Federal District;
  • Autonomous district for avtonomny okrug, as in Koryakia Autonomous District (Okrug).
  • The term is used in names of administrative divisions of the two federal cities of Russia:
    • Administrative okrugs of Moscow, an upper-level administrative division type;
    • Municipal okrugs of St. Petersburg, a lower-level administrative division type.
  • The term okrug is also used in names of selsovet-level administrative divisions:
    • Okrug, as in okrugs of Samara Oblast;
    • Rural okrug for selsky okrug, as in rural okrugs of Adygea;
    • Rural territorial okrug for selsky territorialny okrug, as in rural territorial okrugs of Murmansk Oblast;
    • Stanitsa okrug for stanichny okrug, as in stanitsa okrugs of Krasnodar Krai.
