Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is the third game made by Oddworld Inhabitants, released as one of the launch titles for Microsoft Xbox. It is the second installment of the official Oddworld quintology. As of June 13 2006, this game is not backwards compatible with the Xbox's sucessor, the Xbox 360.

Story

Taking place after the events of Abe's Exoddus, the story begins when a Gabbit called Munch was swimming with his fellow Gabbits in the oceans of Oddworld, but this was before there were any web nettings therefore Munch soon realised that they have all suddenly disappeared, making Munch very lonely. But then Munch hears what appears to be another Gabbit calling from the land. As Munch got closer it turned out to be a trap set by Vykkers Labs and so Munch gets captured. Meanwhile the Almighty Raisin calls for Abe to go and rescue Munch from Vykkers Labs. Soon after Munch finds that he has been experimented on now having a sonar on his head that turns out to be a plan for the Vykkers to find trapped critters more easily, also revealing that Munch is the last Gabbit on Oddworld. After the two Vykkers (Irwin and Humphrey) left the laboratory Munch is then befriended by Fuzzles, telling him to use the sonar to set them free so they can set him free as well, eventually Munch escapes but falls down from a junk shoot and falls onto Abe in the process who used the Great Well to get up to Vykkers Lab, they both fell onto the ground. When they both managed to get to the Almighty Raisin they were then told that they have to go back to Vykkers Labs to save the last can of Gabbiar (Gabbit eggs) and Abe must save his unborn Mudokon brothers as well. But to do this they need to make a Pud class Glukkon called Lulu into a wealthy Glockstar, once after they have done this Abe & Munch sneak into Vykkers Labs just at the same time Lulu enters.

There are two different endings to this game, the good ending and the bad ending. The ending will depend on your Quarma, if you rescue enough Mudokon Scrubs, Fuzzles and Mudokon eggs (unless you save all of them) you will get the good ending but if you didn't rescue them (or also get them killed) you will get the bad ending. In the bad ending Abe & Munch get attacked by Fuzzles, soon after Abe's head is now a trophy and the Vykkers are ready to take Munch's lungs out for the Glukkon queen, Lady Margaret, killing Munch in the process. Though in the good ending Abe manages to possess Lulu and then used him to win the can of Gabbiar in the auction, leaving Lulu bankrupt. Soon after Irwin and Humphrey come back to the laboratory to find a stack of explosives ready to blow up and so Vykkers Labs is destroyed.

There is a worse Quarma in the game called Black Quarma, which will give you another newspaper telling you that Abe and Munch have been done for, the Glukkon queen gets new lungs, the last can of Gabbiar gets eaten and the Mudokon eggs have hatched. But to get this requires a game enhancer since Black Quarma requires the player to kill every single Mudokon and Fuzzle in the game.

Gameplay

Unlike the previous two games, Munch's Oddysee is the first game in the Oddworld series to be in 3D, unlike the 2D Abe's Oddysee & Abe's Exoddus. Just like the other two games is the GameSpeak function that can be used to communicate with Mudokons and Fuzzles in the game and is the only way you can lead them into the rescue portals, but the newest feature to the series is it can also be used to tell the Mudokon or Fuzzles to attack the enemy. The GameSpeak has been changed slightly meaning if you just want to greet an individual you have to tap the greet button and if you want to greet everything you have to hold the button. However there is no actual GameSpeak for the enemies you can possess such as Sligs which instead now say random sayings like "Poo Brain" unlike the previous games where they did have their own GameSpeak commands. Abe's chant possession ability has also been changed, this time as a floating ball of energy that you can control but in order to possess an enemy you now need spooceshrubs, which are green and ball shaped and are also used for opening some locked doors. Other new features include Abe being able to pick up objects and people, and different vending machine power-ups such as Espresso which increases speed for a limited time. But the best new feature is you can switch between Abe & Munch. Munch does have his own abilities like using his sonar to control the Snoozers from the control panel as well as pick up grabbers and he can also swim in water while Abe can’t.

Pre-Munch's Oddysee

Munch's Oddysee was originally going to be made exclusive for the PlayStation 2 but this version was cancelled since the PlayStation 2 wasn’t a powerful enough console and so Oddworld Inhabitants decided to make the game exclusively for the Xbox instead. However, there were many different features that didn’t make it into the final version of the game. The differences are listed below.

  • Sligs were originally able to climb ladders.
  • Abe being able to hide in the shadows like in the previous games.
  • Sligs smoked cigarettes.
  • A giant hamster like wheel used for making Mudokons run on them as a way to power the machines in the facility.
  • Sligs were able to beat up Mudokon workers like in the previous games.
  • Abe could toss Sligs out of the window and so smashes the glass and makes the Slig fall to his death from a giant height.
  • The Recycler was going to have a LCD screen chart for how much meat and fat there is of the chopped up character and to also show how much of it was useful.
  • Mudokon natives could grow trees by chanting.
  • Mudokon workers wielded chain-saws for chopping down trees.
  • Flying helicopters, most probably similar to the Flying Sligs.
  • A scene of a few Mudokons struggling to walk in the wind, in the same video it then showed a scene with an army of marching Sligs, the marching scene actually survived into the actual game but as a poor quality movie and they are marching the opposite way, which can be found in one of the levels.
  • A flying helicopter drops a SoulStorm Brew vending machine which lands on a Mudokon and then the vending machine fires SoulStorm Brew cans at another Mudokon that knocks him out, the last can then landed into the Mudokon's mouth, forcing him to drink it.
  • Creatures called Meetles were meant to appear in this game.
