On May 12, 2006, an oil pipeline ruptured outside Lagos, Nigeria. As people came to collect some of the oil the pipeline exploded; up to 200 people may have been killed. On the following day President Olusegun Obasanjo ordered tighter security around much of Nigeria's pipelines with rescue workers burying the dead in mass graves.
