Neotantra refers to modern or otherwise New Age appropriations of tantra that usually disregard requirements involving the guidance of a guru and ritual conduct, though they otherwise adopt many of the terms and concepts of Indian tantra. In these circles, "tantra" is often a synonym for sacred sexuality, i.e. a belief that sex ought to be recognized as a sacred act which is capable of elevating its participants to a higher spiritual plane. At other times "tantra" comes to mean a set of techniques for cultivating a more fulfilling sexual or love relationship, like the otherwise unrelated Kama Sutra, regardless of its mystical import.

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, later known as Osho, used tantra in combination with breathing techniques, bioenergy, yoga and massage in some of his groups. His students continued this concept and developed it. One of his successful and well known students is Margot Anand. Tantramassage (Tantric Massage) is a form of massage developed in the 1980s by Andro, Andreas Rothe, a teacher for massage, meditation and yoga in Berlin, Germany. This method became very popular in Germany and Switzerland.

Many other teachers have pioneered their modern understanding of tantra as it relates to its ancient roots. Another way of looking at is a top-down approach. In other words, tantric knowledge or teachings can be directly transmitted from teacher to student through the modalities of eye contact, playful conversation, touch and sexual intercourse.

Today Kenneth Ray Stubbs changed perspective about neotantra as to the reasons why women and men participate in sacred sex work through his book "Women of the Light: The New Sacred Prostitute," and his DVD set "Magdalene Unveiled" describing some of the spiritual concepts and practices of the ancient and modern sacred prostitute and tantric. This kind of material may sometimes be used to study neo-tantric practices and is part of the background information for the “sacred intimate” or "sacred prostitute" on his/her path towards becoming a powerful neotantric healer. The goal is to raise spiritual awarenesskundalini into bliss and ecstasy and to be in close communion with the divine. The sacred prostitute has emerged as a valid spiritual path in the eyes of those who practice it. As a result, neo-tantra and sex work are becoming more and more intertwined as an expensive healing art form alternative.
