The Naga Jolokia pepper is a chile pepper found naturally in the army garrison town of Tezpur, in the north-eastern state of Assam, India. It is a naturally occurring chili and is reputed to be one of the hottest in the world.

It is also called Bih Jolokia in some places of Assam (Bih = Poison, Jolokia = chilli pepper; in Assamese).

When ripe it measures two inches long and a half inch wide with an orange color, similar in appearance to the Habanero pepper.

Scoville rating

It is reported to have a rating of 855,000 units on the Scoville scale, which would mean it is hotter than the hybrid cultivar Red Savina pepper. The Naga Jolokia's claim comes from scientists at India's Defence Research Laboratory (DRL). The claim remains unconfirmed though, due to doubt about measuring methods. For comparison, pure capsaicin rates at 15,000,000 Scoville units.

Recently, the Naga Dorset which was developed as a hybrid of the Naga Morich by a couple in Dorset, England has claimed to be the hottest in the world.
