NCAA Division I-AA independent schools are four-year institutions in the United States whose football programs are not part of a football conference. This does not mean that I-AA independents schedule each other for competition as conference schools do. There are considerably fewer independent schools than in years past, so many independent schools later join (or attempt to join) established conferences.

On April 10, 2006, Stony Brook announced that its football team will compete as a Division I-AA Independent in 2007.
