Mr. Game & Watch is a fictional character in the Game & Watch series, a line of hand held static LCD video games. He is one of Nintendo's first video game creations (having premiered in April 28, 1980). Before the Game Boy or the Famicom was introduced, the Game & Watch series appeared as individual timepieces. His appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee finally yielded him his name, as prior to this he was an anonymous protagonist. In addition, and to the confusion of some, he can be found in many Wario games, including the new WarioWare, Inc. games. In Wario Land 4 (aka Wario Land Advance in Japan) for the Game Boy Advance, he appears as the store owner, although that one turns out to be Princess Shokora in disguise. It's obvious this isn't the real Mr. Game & Watch, as the store owner has eyes.
Mr. Game & Watch is a resident of a totally flat world, and has an easily recognizable frame frame style of movement. He was never truly meant to be a hero, but rather to be a guy at his best, equipped with a multitude of skills. He has tried successfully almost every job in the world: whether it was juggling, cooking, treasure-searching, defending a fort from Native Americans, parachuting, being a Fireman or a Judge, Mr. Game & Watch got his job done.
Mr. Game & Watch is normally a solid black color; his palette swaps are Red, Blue and Green. Also, when charging up the Super Scope, he turns Yellow, and while firing a Ray Gun he turns green. When holding a hammer, Mr. Game & Watch is the only character that uses only one hand, and when using an item such as a bunny hood it will be 3D while Mr. Game & Watch is still 2D. Also, when he grabs a metal box, he'll appear 3-D while under its influence, though when the game is paused, one can tell that only his shading has changed, and he is still actually 2-D.
Mr. Game & Watch also has an accompanying stage named "Flat Zone", a location in the larger "Superflat World", which looks like a Game & Watch Helmet system, although the name has been changed to say "Smash Bros.", while certain things and characters from certain Game & Watch titles are added into it. Sometimes tools such as buckets and wrenches will fall from the sky, reminiscent of the object of the game "Helmet", which was to dodge falling tools. Other obstacles are some platforms with a man holding a manhole cover, while he moves in different spots with it, reminiscent of the object of the game Manhole, which was to keep pedestrians from falling into the sewers. Also, a worker from the game Oil Panic will sometimes walk out of the building on the right side of the stage, and will accidentally spill oil, making it slippery and difficult for players to move around normally. It is also one of the two SSBM arenas that doesn't have a way to fall through the bottom (the EarthBound-based Onett being the other one).
Oddly, when Mr Game & Watch is grabbed and is being thrown, his movement changes from his trademark frame movement to a much smoother animation, this most noticable when Donkey Kong carries Mr Game & Watch on his back, .
His "voice" is composed of beeping sounds, some of which are taken from Game and Watch games.
