Monson is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The population was 666 at the 2000 census.
Monson is best known for the production of slate in the mid 19th century to the early 20th century, and for being the last town stop on the Appalachian Trail for northbound hikers before they enter the "100 Mile Wilderness." Slate production resulted in the creation of the Monson Railroad.
The town also holds between 2-4 annual events such as Snow Roller Day (a celebration of the town's snow roller), Fall Festival (a fall-orientated celebration), several summer events, and a Kris Kringle Fair. These events are made to get the community together, which it rarely does.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 127.6 km² (49.2 mi²). 121.9 km² (47.1 mi²) of it is land and 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²) of it (4.41%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 666 people, 295 households, and 179 families residing in the town. The population density was 5.5/km² (14.1/mi²). There were 564 housing units at an average density of 4.6/km² (12.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.20% White, 0.30% Native American, 0.30% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.45% of the population.
There were 293 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the town the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $1, and the median income for a family was $34,271. Males had a median income of $26,667 versus $20,962 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,044. About 9.8% of families and 15.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.4% of those under age 18 and 50.8% of those age 65 or over.
