Monroe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 22,076. It is the county seat of Monroe County6. The city is adjacent to Monroe Charter Township, but is politically independent.
There were 8,594 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,810, and the median income for a family was $51,442. Males had a median income of $42,881 versus $25,816 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,948. About 9.0% of families and 12.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.0% of those under age 18 and 16.1% of those age 65 or over.
The Port of Monroe is the only port in Michigan that is on Lake Erie.
The Monroe Power Plant, which is a coal burning plant operated by Detroit Edison, has the second largest generating capacity of any coal plant in North America.
