The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area protects a corridor of land along a 72 mile (115 kilometer) section of the Mississippi River between Anoka, Minnesota on the north and Hastings, Minnesota, near the confluence of the St. Croix River and the Mississippi River, on the south. The park links no less than eight historical, natural, and cultural sites in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area, including Fort Snelling. Nearly all of the sites are privately owned and managed; the National Park Service owns just 35 acres (0.14 km²) out of the nearly 54,000 acres (218.5 km²) protected by the park.
