Micrococcus is a genus of bacteria, in the Micrococcaceae family. It consists of small, round, Gram-positive organisms that cluster in pairs or larger groups. Micrococcus often inhabits the bodies of animals, and are usually benign.

The Micrococcus genus is closely related to Staphylococcus. Some areas of differentiation include the following:

  • Staphylococcus can grow in up to 10% NaCl environment whereas Micrococus can grow in up to 5% NaCl
  • Micrococcus organisms are oxidase positive, whereas most Staphyolococcus organisms are oxidase negative.
