Michio Kushi (久司 道夫 Kushi Michio) born 1926 in Japan, helped to bring modern macrobiotics to the United States.
Background
After World War II, Kushi studied with macrobiotic educator, Georges Ohsawa, in Japan. Since coming to America in 1949, Kushi, and his wife, Aveline, founded Erewhon Natural Foods, the East West Journal, the East West Foundation, the Kushi Foundation, One Peaceful World and the Kushi Institute and written over 70 books.
Kushi studied law and international relations at the University of Tokyo, and continued his studies at Columbia University. Kushi now lives in Brookline, Massachusetts. He has five children and thirteen grandchildren.
Kushi has lectured about philosophy, spiritual development, health, food and diseases in many conferences and seminars around the world .
Achievements
Kushi received the Award of Excellence from the United Nations Writers Society. In 1999, the Smithsonian Institution opened a permanent collection on macrobiotics and alternative health care in his name.
