Miandoab is a city in north west of Iran in the West Azerbaijan province. It has a population of more than 130,000.
Miandoab , also known as Qoshachay in Azeri, is situated in a delta region of the two rivers Zarrineh and Simineh, in Azeri Jigatu Chay and Tatau Chay. Miandoab enjoys a very fertile soil and excellent Mediterranean climate. Due to the establishment of a sugar factory early 20th century, there has been large industrial activity compared to nearby towns.
The majority of Miandoab's inhabitants are ethnic Azeri Turks, although there are some Kurds residing in the city. Most Azeris are followers of Shia sect of Islam, there are however sizeable community of Ahl-e Haqq and Alevi both in Miandoab and surrounding villages. Miandoab used to have sizable number of Bahá'í families, but due to the pogrom activity at the time of Islamic Revolution, most of them have migrated to other cities within Iran or overseas.
