Mediaset is the first Italian commercial television network. Mediaset has its headquarters in Milan, Lombardy. The network was founded by Silvio Berlusconi, but today it is controlled by his family through Fininvest. Berlusconi often uses the Italian television networks owned by the company for his own political interests, as was apparent in the elections of April 2006 where he tried to use his connections to host an unplanned debate between himself and Romano Prodi with an unsuccessful attempt to broadcast the whole time of the debate with just him in clear violation of election laws. Many of its studios are located in Milano 2, the area of Milan that first started showing TeleMilano (known now as Canale 5). The ownership had become a source of controversy for Berlusconi, as he was both the Prime Minister of Italy and thus appointed the director of programming for RAI and the owner of the three largest and most-watched private channels in Italy.
