Masterminds is a 1997 comedy action film starring Patrick Stewart. This film is about a young prankster named Oswald "Ozzie" Paxton (played by Vincent Kartheiser) who gets expelled from a preppy school and decides to return for one last prank. Upon returning to the school he finds out that a former school employee is holding the school hostage for millions of dollars in ransom. Using his love for pranks he must rely on his youth to outwit the devious criminal mastermind.

  • This film's working title was Smart Alec.
  • When Patrick Stewart's character makes his first appearance, he asks Principal Maloney to call him by his first name, "Rafe," to which she immediately replies "Fine." This is a reference to the actor Ralph Fiennes, whose name is pronounced "Rafe Fine."
  • For all intents and purposes, the film is an all ages remake of Die Hard sharing many story similarities and plot points.
