Marquette University High School (or MUHS) is a private, Roman Catholic high school for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is a member of both the National Catholic Educational Association and Jesuit Secondary Education Association.
The school was spun off from the preparatory department of Marquette University in 1907. Since then, an overwhelming majority (98%) of its students go on to a four-year college or university. There were 239 students in the class of 2005 and 280 in the class of '06. The class of '07 is slated to be the 150th graduating class at MUHS.
Campus
Marquette University High School is located at 35th Street and Wisconsin Avenue (3401 W. Wisconsin Avenue) in the historic Merrill Park Neighborhood on Milwaukee's West Side.
Athletics
The institution boasts one of the strongest and most successful athletic programs in the state of
Wisconsin, with 60% of the student body participating in a sport. The school fields competitive teams in
baseball,
basketball,
cross country running,
downhill skiing,
football,
golf,
ice hockey,
lacrosse,
rugby,
soccer,
swimming,
tennis,
track & field,
ultimate frisbee,
volleyball, and
wrestling. Most recently, the MUHS soccer team tied the national record for most consecutive high school state championships (10).
Bruce Weber,
University of Illinois head coach, was a former assistant basketball coach at MUHS.
Academics
Marquette strives to foster morally strong, intellectually competent, young men dedicated to the service of others. The school is known on the national level for its success in
debate and
forensics, as well as for its excellence in other areas of study. Its Latin program is considered by some to be one of the best in the
Midwest. However, this year at the Wisconsin Junior Classical League (WJCL) Convention, Marquette was defeated by Madison West High School in three out of four levels in Competitive Certamen (JCL's signature competition, Latin Quiz Bowl.) At the 2006 National Junior Classical League convention, no Marquette teams will be representing Wisconsin in any of the three national levels (Novice, Lower, or Upper.) Recent successes in national math and science competitions demonstrate MUHS to be a likely national contender for future titles in the
Science Bowl,
Ocean Bowl, and exams adminstered by the
Mathematical Association of America. MUHS also boasts an impressive
Advanced Placement Program that includes classes in science, mathematics, world languages, social studies, and English.
Science
Its science club participates in a variety of science competitions including the
Science Bowl and the
Lake Sturgeon Bowl, the regional
National Ocean Sciences Bowl. On
2006-01-28, the science club took a team of five seniors to the regional
Science Bowl at the
Milwaukee School of Engineering. The team was undefeated in both
round-robin pool play and
double elimination, taking first place. The team will go on to compete at the National Science Bowl. Students from MUHS also participate in the
Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and the science club writes and acts out a short, interactive play about recycling entitled
The Journey of Garbage.
Theater
In 2005, the MUHS Prep Players put on
Bang the Drum Slowly and performed the musical
Les Misérables. In 2006, MUHS did the first ever Milwaukee production of
Hot Mikado in the spring, after
The Sting the previous winter.
In addition, every year since 1963, the senior class has written and performed a satirical musical called "Senior Follies", a farce show, set inside the school, in which the seniors portray exaggerated caricatures of faculty members. In October of 2005, the MUHS Class of 2006 presented "Senior Follies: Back in the MUSSR".
