Maremmano horses are bred in Tuscany and are the traditional mounts of buttero, or cattle men. Maremannos are not known for their speed, but they are useful as general purpose horses. The Maremannos are thought to be form the Neapolitan horses(Arabian, Barb, and Spanish blood).

Federico Grisone was the founder of the Neapolitan riding Academy. These horses are good for light draght work such as cattle rounding, but not too attractive, or fast, but they work very hard and are pretty strong. They are ecconimical to keep. They are usually aroung 15.3 hh. In other words, 61.2 in. They can be of any solid color. The have flat withers and a quite low set tail. Their confromation is being improved by adding Thoroughbred blood. A good deal of outcrossing took place later- some involving imported English horses, including the norfolk roadster- so that the horses whitch became known as the Maremmano were something of a mixture and no fixed type. BY no means the most beautiful of horses, nor the speediest, they are never-the-less good, honest workers, combining strengh and toughness with a good calm temperment.

DID YOU KNOW? During the seventeenth century Italy became one of the world leaders for horse breeding. Most famous of all was the neapolitian and the Maremmano.
