Maglite is a brand of flashlight created by Mag Instrument, Inc. of Ontario, California. The Maglite was first introduced in 1979. Encased in an aluminum alloy casing, the flashlights are renowned for their durability. This is a primary selling point of Maglite flashlights in their advertising. One Maglite commercial features a tractor-trailer truck driving over a Maglite, only for the driver to step out and find the Maglite still working.
Today, the Maglite flashlights have a large set of accessories, ranging from belt holsters to attachable fiber optics extensions. The accessories are developed and marketed both by Mag Instrument, Inc. and by third-party vendors.
Many Police Organisations use Maglite's, as they are durable and can stand the constant shocks that are expected with the job.
Mag Instrument was founded by Anthony Maglica, a Croat.
Sizes
Maglites can be bought in the following sizes which vary by the quantity and size of batteries required:
- Rechargeable
- 2 through 6 D-cell batteries
- 2 through 4 C-cell batteries
- 2 AA cell batteries (Mini Maglite)
- 2 AAA cell batteries (Mini Maglite)
- 1 AAA cell battery (Maglite Solitaire)
Maglites as weapons
Due to their mass and durability, the larger D-cell Maglites are also useful as batons. Security personnel (who often must carry flashlights in the course of their work) can, in a pinch, use their lights as mêlée weapons. They are also useful to private citizens as self-defense weapons. However, the larger D-cell units are heavy. People of smaller frame and strength may find the equivalent C-cell units more appropriate and manageable. According to Maglite, there is no difference in quality and durability between the C-cell and D-cell units. Always try a prospective unit with batteries fully loaded, before purchasing.
LED versions
Maglite announced their first Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights in early 2006. LED flashlights are more efficient at lower output levels than incandescent bulbs, and are also more physically shock resistant. LEDs also have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs and can last through up to 10,000 hours of use. *
