In 2005, Maddox announced that he was writing a book, opening up a newsletter to post updates. In July, he held an illustrator competition in which he invited all artists to submit artwork. He then chose several illustrators and contracted them to do the artwork. Maddox unveiled the name, The Alphabet of Manliness, which was published in June 2006 by Kensington Books. It skyrocketed to the number one spot on Amazon.com. The book is illustrated and its format is a chapter-length entry for each letter in the English alphabet regarding a "manly" topic (A, for example, is for Ass-Kicking.)
Maddox appeared at book signings wearing a crown and king's robe, while promoting the fact he would sign women's breasts. On the book's website, Maddox also listed a fictional set of rules for fans attending- including no eye contact, bowing and remaining at least 3 feet (1 m) away at all times.
On June 28, 2006, Maddox said in a Q and A in a Chicago, Illinois booksigning that he has been offered to make the Alphabet of Manliness into a motion picture, and that he had 'no idea how they would do that.'
