The area was named after the First Nations Madoueskaks tribe, that inhabited the whole of the Saint John River valley from Grand Falls, New Brunswick to Sept-Îles, Quebec. The earliest European settlers were the Acadian who moved to the area to escape the British. The area was ground-zero of the Aroostook War, a border dispute led by businessman and political activist John Baker.
