The Macau telephone numbering plan remains separate from that of mainland China, as Macau, like Hong Kong, is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
Telephone numbers vary in length: fixed line numbers are mostly six digits long, while mobile (cellular) phone numbers are seven digits. Fixed line numbers start with any digit except 0,1 or 6, while mobile (cellular) phone numbers with 6. To make international calls from Macau (including those to mainland China) one would dial the international access code 00, followed by the country code, area code, and called party's number. However, calls to Hong Kong require only the code 01.
Some special numbers are 3-digit or 4-digit.
