MGM Grand Detroit is a gambling establishment located on the John C. Lodge Freeway in Detroit, Michigan. A joint venture of MGM MIRAGE and Partners Detroit, LLC. the temporary casino opened on July 29, 1999 and is the first of three casinos to open in Detroit. It is currently the largest casino in the City of Detroit.
In 2005 it was the subject of a possible sale when MGM MIRAGE was in the process of purchasing rival casino operator Mandalay Resort Group, Michigan state gaming regulations prohibit one gaming company from owning more then one casino in the state and as a result the newly combined MGM MIRAGE/Mandalay Resort Group divested itself of the MotorCity Casino choosing to keep the MGM Grand Detroit.
On December 13, 2005 the Michigan Gaming Control Board approved MGM Grand's plans for a permanent casino with 100,000 square feet of casino space, 401 hotel rooms and an eight story self-parking garage to be located on John C. Lodge Freeway and Bagley Steet approximately three to four blocks from the temporary casino.
