Lyrical Ballads, with its publication in 1798, is classically considered to have marked the beginning of the Romantic movement in literature.
The book was a joint venture between William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Both set out to overturn what they considered the priggish, learned and highly sculpted forms of eighteenth century English poetry. In the 1802 edition Wordworth added his famous "Preface" where he explained his poetical concept.
