Loro Parque (Spanish for "parrot park") is a zoo located on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife. It was opened in 1972 with 150 parrots. There are now over 3000 parrots representing over 300 species, claimed to be the largest collection in the world, as well as the largest "penguinarium" in the world, dolphins and various other animals. Some filming of the 2005 movie The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy took place in Loro Parque. In February 2006, Loro Parque received four young orcas on loan from SeaWorld.
The Fundación Loro Parque does much conservation work with parrots, including holding an international parrot convention every four years.
