This is a list of literary characters with nine fingers, assuming for the sake of argument and simplicity that a thumb is a finger.
- Frodo Baggins, from The Lord of the Rings had one finger bitten off by Gollum and was known thereafter as "Frodo of the Nine Fingers"
- Sauron, from The Lord of the Rings, had his ring finger cut off by Isildur.
- Bink, the main character of the first two of Piers Anthony's Xanth novels. Accidentally cut off his middle finger as a child while playing with a cleaver. Could've been reattached readily with magic but he was embarrassed of the accident and buried the finger, letting it rot, and hiding his hand. While on his travels to see The Good Magician Humfrey, Bink encountered a healing spring. While retrieving some of its water for a mortally wounded soldier, the water splashed onto his hand and restored his middle finger just like new.
- Violet Blake from the Remnants series, had a Worm eat through her right index finger.
- Nadia Cherneschevsky, the constructions engineer of the Mars Trilogy of Kim Stanley Robinson. She loses her finger in a construction accident. Later in the trilogy, mecidine has advanced to the point where she grows it back.
- Juan Chicoy, the main character and driver of the bus in The Wayward Bus by John Steinbeck, is missing the first knuckle of one finger.
- In the deeply complicated plot of the 1987 film Winter Kills a woman named Evelyn is murdered by a hit man. To prove she is dead, he cuts off one of her fingers on which she wears a tightly-fitting ring, and he brings the finger to his client. Later, two blackmailers try to convince the hit man's client that Evelyn is still alive; as part of their plot, they kidnap Julie Rose, an actress who is Evelyn's exact double, and they amputate her corresponding finger.
- The narrator in A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Irving had his right index finger cut off by his best friend in an effort to prevent the narrator from being drafted during the Vietnam War.
- Peter Pettigrew, friend of James Potter (Harry Potter's father), lost one finger in a magicians' duel with Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
- Rosie, in Rosie and the Dance of the Dinosaurs - a children's book about a child with nine fingers.
- Margot Tenenbaum (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), the brilliant playwright of The Royal Tenenbaums ran away from home for two weeks and came back with half of one of her fingers missing.
- Charley Baileygates (played by Jim Carrey), in the film, "Me, Myself and Irene" gets his finger shot off with a handgun.
- Tim, from Eric Bogosian's play Suburbia, and the movie of the same name, cut off one finger in order to be discharged from the US Air Force.
- Jim Deakins, frontiersman hero of The Big Sky, has a finger amputated.
- Charon, the assasin and antagonist in South by Southeast, has only nine fingers.
