This is a list of creatures (enemy characters) featured in the video game Resident Evil 4.
For individual enemy characters, see Bitores Mendez, Ramon Salazar, Jack Krauser and Osmund Saddler.
Las Plagas
Las Plagas (Spanish for "The Plagues") are the agent of transformation in Resident Evil 4, unlike the various viruses from previous games. The differences are enormous. Whereas Umbrella's viruses destroy a person's mind and body through mutations, resulting in necrosis of the host's body, Las Plagas are more subtle, invisibly attaching themselves to the victim's central nervous system and seizing control of their mind. Humans infested with Las Plagas, unlike zombies, retain full human appearance and speech capabilities, and seem relatively normal in both behaviour and outward appearance.
Ganados have been seen exhibiting such socially unacceptable behaviours as attacking outsiders, murdering each other, eating rotten and otherwise damaged food, and possibly committing acts of cannibalism. They also do not bother to keep their surroundings sanitary (e.g. by not cleaning their toilet facilities and beds, and leaving their murdered victims to rot in various places, such as in barns and in their dwellings). It is unclear if these behaviors are influenced by their circumstances and orders of the person in control of the Queen Plaga, or actual personality changes in the persons infected by the Las Plagas.
When night-time arrives, the Plaga parasite may emerge from its host body after the body sustains enough damage, or if its head is destroyed. The head of the host may either be destroyed completely and replaced by the parasite, or the parasite may emerge from the mouth/neck of the Ganado. The Plaga then takes control of the remaining body.
Several varieties of Plaga may be seen during the course of the game. Some appear as the result of damage to certain parts of the host's body, such as the head, or are plainly seen and actively attempt to aid their host in attacking its target, and may be seen either in part as a protrusion out of its host's body, or in whole as a detached entity. The following is a list of non-unique Plagas or their parts as seen ingame.
- Scythe-like plagas, found in villagers, which emerge from their host's severed neck, and attempt to harm their opponent by swinging at him.
- Caterpillar-like plagas, which may emerge from the opened necks of zealots and commandos, and attack by swallowing their opponents head whole.
- Facehugger-like plagas, which may emerge from zealots and commandos necks, capable of detaching from their hosts. Will eventually die after detaching.
- Whip-like protrusions, found in Colmillos, Garradors and Del Lago, among others.
- Leech-like plagas, some of which can only be seen using an infrared scope, found on Regenerators and Iron Maidens.
Los Ganados
Los Ganados (from
Spanish, meaning
The Cattle or
The Livestock, even though a secondary definition may mean
The Earned) are the primary enemies in the game and serve as a replacement for the zombies in previous games. They are inhabitants of a mountainous region who have become infested by the mind-controlling Las Plagas parasites. Ganados look like ordinary people, with their only distinguishable feature being their reddish eyes.
Ganados are much more dangerous than the zombies found in previous Resident Evil games. Not only are Ganados much smarter, faster, and stronger, but they are also capable of impersonating non-controlled humans, with few visible differences other than their sometimes reddish eyes. Humans infected with the Plaga parasites can be controlled, through unknown means, by the person in control of the Queen Egg. In one of Ada's reports, she suggests that it is possible that the Queen issues commands through high pitched sound waves, the same principle found in dog whistles. It is unknown to what extent Ganados are aware of their fate, as they are generally uncommunicative to outsiders.
There are three main types of Ganados found in the game (by order of appearance): Villagers, Zealots and Soldiers.
Villagers
The villagers were once peaceful residents of a rural Spanish community until they were exposed to the parasites. From that point, they became ruthless savages under Osmund Saddler's control. The Ganados' lives look somewhat normal and they have been seen carrying out normal farming tasks. However, grisly corpses found throughout the village suggest that the Ganados are cannibals. The drinking water of the village and the living conditions of Saddler's soldiers are very old and unsanitary. When Leon first arrives at the village, he is immediately attacked by one of the villagers after questioning him about Ashley's whereabouts. The villagers are underpowered compared to other Ganados, as their arsenal is comprised mostly of farming tools, which includes pitchforks, hatchets, sickles, knives and a few carry dynamite. Early in the game, Female ganados attack Leon with knives and pitchforks among their male companions. Upon completion of the game, a series of sketches posing as the background for the credits serves as a chilling flashback of the earlier days of the unnamed village. What was once a joyful community happily distanced from the modern world, populated with farmers and their children, became corrupt as families turned against one another. It also shows how Saddler introduced himself as a modern-day priest in order to deceive the village. At the beginning of the game, a Ganado is burning something in the fire; upon closer inspection, it is the driver of the car Leon was riding in before questioning the very first assailant. After eliminating the first combatant, if you examine the fireplace you will see the text: "Something is burning in here, but what?" Upon looking at it through a scoped rifle,(round 2) it is a small hand, just big enough to be a young child's, thus suggesting mass filicides (which explains the lack of youngsters during Leon's arrival) after their assimilation to the Los Illuminados cult.
Zealots
The zealots are members of the Los Illuminados cult and appear in
Ramon Salazar's castle. They are dressed in clerical robes bearing the cult's insignia. The color of their robe determines their rank. The colors are black for the lowest rank, purple for the middle rank, and red for the highest rank. The zealots are better equipped than the villagers, using a variety of medieval arms. Also, their robe style changes as Leon progresses further into Salazar's castle, as well as some high-ranking zealots wearing bulletproof skull-masks that make headshots impossible. They wield scythes, flails, crossbows, wooden shields, and a small number carry dynamite or even rocket launchers.
Soldiers
The soldiers are members of Saddler's mercenary organization, assigned to protect his island complex. They are generally better equipped than other Ganados, and run faster. They can be seen carrying stun rods, flails, wooden shields,
RPGs, dynamite, crossbows, gas masks and bullet-proof helmets. Some large soldiers carry large hammers and thick, bulletproof metal armor. Soldiers' voices sound much less human than previous variants.
Notable Ganados
- Dr. Salvador - A Ganado who wears an overall and a potato sack-like mask and chases after intruders with his chainsaw. Two possible conceptual influences include Jason Voorhees (who wears a sack-mask in Friday the 13th Part 2 and is exceptionally resistant to damage) and Leatherface (who wields a chainsaw). He is extremely damage-resistant, and is capable of decapitating his prey with a single attack.
Unlike most other ganados, Dr. Salvador's body does not disintegrate after he is killed, a trait he shares with some of the Leader zealots in Salazar's castle. He is encountered first in the village "pueblo" (if the player unfortunately triggers a certain event), and for the second time outside Chief Mendez's house. Salvador and another Ganado which looks similar to Dr. Salvador (Save for being slightly shorter and wearing an unbuttoned gray jacket over a yellowish-white button shirt and a bloodier sack over his head) appear in the mine beneath Salazar's castle. They appear again in the mine cart ride and are never seen again. An unnamed variation of Dr. Salvador (known unofficially as Mr. Salvador or Dr. Salvador X by fans) also appears in "The Mercenaries" minigame as a sub-boss in the "Waterworld" stage, who is resistant to even the strongest firearms (although he is not invincible and can be killed.) and wields a double-bladed chainsaw capable of decapitating his opponent instantly, and his infuriating laugh is audible over the "You are dead" animation.
- The Bella Sisters - Two female Ganados who wear bandages covering their faces and wield chainsaws. They look exactly like the two different generic female Ganados body types save for those said bandages. It can also be noted that they are less skilled with their chainsaws, as rather than both charging and swinging viciously with their weapons they only attack with a single strike after charging.
- J.J. - A giant Ganado who wields a M134 Vulcan Minigun of the caliber 7.62 and fires it relentlessly. He wears a red beret and an eye patch over his right eye with the symbol of the "Los Illuminados" cult. He uses his immense strength to carry his gun and to swing it against his opponent at close range. Like Dr. Salvador, his body does not disintegrate after he is killed. A conceptual influence on J.J. may include Vulcan Raven of Metal Gear Solid, which is also typically seen carrying a large Gatling-gun type weapon.
Colmillos
Colmillos (from Spanish, meaning
fangs, in reference to the
canine teeth) are wolves that have been implanted with Plaga parasites. They act like guard dogs for the Ganados. As such, they can be considered the equivalent of the "Cerberus", or "Zombie Dog", creatures from previous games. The player will meet both a regular colmillo, which resembles an over-aggressive wolf, and the colmillos in which the plagas are more obviously developed-- into gigantic, flailing tentacles. They generally appear to be more intelligent and more aggressive in their attacks than the ganados, and attack either by having their parasite's tentacles flail at their victim, or by tackling it and attempting to rip its throat out. The Colmillos hunt in packs of two to four. They are possibly inspired by the husky dog from
John Carpenter's
The Thing, which also once appeared with tentacles sprouting from its back.
Novistador
Novistador is a giant insect-like creature that was created from experiments with human specimens by Los Illuminados and appears to be the
Resident Evil 4 equivalent to the
Hunters of former Resident evil games, and surely enough, if Leon is killed by a claw swipe, his head is ripped clean off his shoulders- the Hunter´s trademark finishing blow. Its name is a
portmanteau of the Spanish words
No and
Vista ("No" and "View") and the
noun suffix of
dor. As such, the name Novistador can be translated as the "Unseen Creature," but literally means
Nosighter.
The name refers to the creature's ability to render itself invisible to the naked eye by changing the color of its husk. This may also be a reference to the "
no-see-um', a species of small, biting flies in the family Ceratopogonidae. There are three types of Novistadors in the game. The first type encountered has the ability to turn invisible, while the second type may also turn invisible but differs in that it is completely white. The third type, encountered later in the game, does not turn invisible, but has the ability to fly. When invisible, the Novistadors can be spotted by their glowing eyes (which change color intermittently), the ripples they make when moving through shallow water, their constant drooling, visible breath (they seem to be fought primarily in cold areas) and their loud skittering noises. Novistadors often fight in packs of two to four and have wings attached to their backs. They attack with their claws and spit acid at their enemies, the latter of which, if used as a fatal blow, will leave Leon's face partially burned to the bone. Leon encounters the Novistadors during certain areas of Salazar's castle. They can be easily dispatched when flying, as any damage whatsoever will be fatal to them.
Garrador
The
Garrador, also known as
The Blind Prisoner is a warrior (possessed by a Plaga parasite) who wears equipment resembling those worn by
gladiators and appears in certain areas of Salazar's castle. Its name literaly means "Man with claws" or something to that extent. The Garrador is equipped with large claws on each hand, which can extend and retract at will. The Garrador is a very brutal creature who will indiscriminately attack anyone and anything in its path and is usually kept under strong restraint. Garradors use their metal claws to stab and otherwise strike at their enemies, resulting in severed limbs, decapitations and other equally gruesome causes of death. If the garrador kills a character with its charging attack, their head is
impaled and the garrador lifts them from the floor in triumph. He will then rear his other arm back in what some people believe to be the Garrador getting ready to impale Leon once more through the stomach.
Garradors are almost completely blind due to their sutured eyes. Instead, they rely on their sense of hearing to track down intruders, and are easily distracted by loud noises. Walking slowly will prevent a Garrador from hearing its target, as long as it is done at a safe distance, as a Garrador is able to hear its target regardless of movement when in extreme proximity. Garradors will become enraged when very loud noises are made, such as by bells, and are prone to charging in the direction the noise and striking at its source, oftentimes resulting in one of their claws being temporarily embedded in a wall or other object.
A Garrador's weak spot is the exposed Plaga parasite on its back, which is vulnerable to gunfire. You can also shoot at Garradors unarmored body parts. Doing so can damage the Garrador and sometimes result in hitting the plagas as well (if shot through the chest with the magnum or the rifle). Some Garradors wear armour, encasing all of their torso, excluding their back.
Armadura
Armadura (from Spanish, meaning
armor) is a Plaga parasite that has taken possession of a suit of
plate armor from Salazar's castle, which provides a sturdy defense. They attack with
medieval weapons, such as
broadswords and
halberds. Their helmets are loosely attached, and once removed will expose a part of the inhabiting Plaga, which is extremely vulnerable to bright lights, e.g. from flashbangs. There are two varieties of the Armadura: one in a lighter-colored armor, which tends to contain a scythe-tentacle parasite, while the darker of the two will contain a centipede-type Plaga that is incredibly dangerous due to its instant-death headbite.
Additionally, some Armaduras may attempt to ambush their victims by staying still until their target approaches, at which point they attempt to hit the target with their axes, and will then invariably disintegrate from the stress of the blow, whether it be to the opponent or to the floor.
Regenerator
A
Regenerator is a mutated creature created from experiments with Las Plagas and human specimens: according to the notes of Luis Sera, they are the most "clearly distinguishable" creatures born from Saddler's experiments. A Regenerator's most distinguishable characteristics are its wide, lipless mouth, its pale skin and bulging torso. They have a superb metabolism that enables them to regenerate lost body parts in a matter of seconds, and are extremely resistant to direct damage, but are unable to live without the
leech-shaped Plagas which inhabit them, which are only visible to the human eye through
thermal imaging equipment. Every time a Plaga is destroyed the Regenerator's flesh begins to expand and ripple. When a Regenerator has lost all inhabiting Plagas its tissue will begin to expand rapidly due to uncontrolled cellular production and will explode spectacularly, leaving only its legs.
They resemble the Heaven Smiles creatures from the video game Killer 7, and share certain characteristics with them. Regenerators can easily be heard wheezing and breathing erratically, a clear sign of their presence (they also have their own highly distinctive theme tune which plays whenever one has noticed the player. This serves as a warning...) The Regenerators appear to have either no skeletal system or a very flexible one, as they can stretch out their gangly limbs like elastic to pull opponents closer and attack them with their wide, gaping mouths. They also demonstrate the ability to slither on the ground at impressive speeds after one of their legs has been shot off- in fact faster than their normal method of movement. They can also leap from this position at Leon and bite him.
The regenerator can range from having two to five parasites depending on difficulty levels and location encountered. Also note that the regenerator in the prison has a parasite on its back making it somewhat like an Iron Maiden without the spikes.
Iron Maiden
An Iron Maiden is a variation of the Regenerator with the added ability to generate sharp spikes from its skin. They are able to latch onto their targets and cause devastating damage by embracing and thus impaling them with their spikes. They have a slightly slower gait than the Regenerators, possibly due to their constant twitching and shivering. They also have no eyes, while their Regenerator cousins each have a pair of glowing red eyes. Iron Maidens also have considerably higher stamina than the Regenerators, as they contain more leech-shaped parasites. One of these parasites is on the back of the Iron Maiden, posing additional difficulties for anyone attempting to disable the creature by killing its parasites. They are nearly impossible to kill without destroying all of their parasites and in order to do so requires a great amount of direct damage.
Del Lago
Del Lago' (which literally means Of the lake, and can be interpreted as Lake Dweller) is a giant aquatic creature that is over twenty meters (sixty feet) long and lives in a lake in the village. Del Lago was created by implanting a Plaga parasite into a salamander. The creature was awakened from its slumber by Saddler after Leon's arrival. This creature also ate the dead body of one of the police officers who escorted Leon to the village. Leon encounters the creature as he tries to cross the lake in a motorboat. The creature gets pierced by his boat's anchor and drags him along, effectively tethering the boat. Leon fights the Del Lago by throwing harpoons at its mouth, back, and side. After the beast finally swims away, Leon´s leg gets caught in the anchor rope that is still attached to Del Lago´s body, and must quickly cut himself free to avoid a being pulled underwater and into a gruesome drowning death.
El Gigante
El Gigante (literally The Giant) are creatures created by Los Illuminados from experiments with Las Plagas and human specimens. They heavily resemble various depictions of trolls, in particular the cave trolls in the Lord of the Rings movies. Standing roughly ten meters (thirty feet) tall, the monsters have tough gray skin that is thick enough to be largely bulletproof. Sufficient damage will force them to their knees and expose their plaga parasites. While the parasite are still visible, the player character is able to either climb onto a Gigante's back to slash the parasite with a knife or simply to shoot it with any available firearm.
Despite its singular name, there is actually more than one Gigante at Saddler's disposal. Later on in the Castle, the player character encounters two Gigantes at the same time, which are unofficially referred to as "Los Dos Gigantes", literally The Two Giants.
Despite their ability to use tools like hurled boulders and tree trunk clubs, the Gigante have limited intellect, and do not show any sense of loyalty to their Ganado keepers.
Verdugo
The
Verdugo (
Executioners) are the mutated bodyguards of Ramon Salazar. One Verdugo (whom Ramon refers as his "right hand" but is often seen in cut-scenes to Salazar's left side.) is dressed in a red robe; the other is dressed in a black robe. Underneath the robes are humanoid-like creatures, with insectoid
exoskeletons, long tails which sport sharp
sickle-like blades on the ends, which are used for surprise attacks. Although both appear black the "right hand" is actually a darker shade of slate blue and looks black due to the limited lighting. The creatures visually resemble the
Xenomorph. Notably, the mandibles on their faces also resemble the Predator or
Yautja and are even sometimes featured carrying spears, a common armament among the Yautja. The Verdugo also bears resemblence to The Creeper from the Jeepers Creepers movies. The Verdugo's exterior is almost completely bullet-proof, but is weakened by exposure to
liquid nitrogen, leaving it more vulnerable to weapons fire and explosives, and will be shattered into a multitude of pieces if hit with sufficient explosive force at once (most likely from a rocket). The Verdugo possesses keen agility and exceptional combat capabilities, making it one of the most dangerous creatures Leon must contend with.
The second Verdugo merges with a mutated plant along with Ramon. This Verdugo forms the large snake-like head of the merged entity.
U3 (It)
The
U3 (referred to as
'It' by Saddler) is a creature that was created by splicing
genes from
reptiles,
insects and a
human into one organism. It goes after its prey with unmatched agility. Saddler sends the U3 to kill Leon while he is exploring an underground cave in the island complex. The U3 is fought in two stages. Initially a centaur-like creature with one tentacle-like arm, a distended, bisected mandible and an enlarged tongue, Leon's weapons are only used to drive off the monster temporarily so as to freely move about in a maze of shipping containers in large suspended cages. Partway through this sequence, an enormous worm-like Plaga erupts from the creature's back and attacks with enlarged, scissor-like jaws. The erupted Plaga is the U3's weak point, as it is more vulnerable to damage than its host. Later on, on solid ground, Leon finally manages to kill the U3. There the U3 shows its ability to dive underground and burst out.
Snakes
A
snake is a normal snake, likely indigenous to the region of Spain the game is set in. They will only attack if boxes that they have been staying in are opened, propelling themselves toward the player character from their positions in their now opened boxes, causing very slight damage to their target. Snakes are commonly found in small boxes, where they may either have been kept or gone into themselves for some reason, or in swamps, where they may be seen propelling themselves through water, suggesting that they may be an aquatic species of snake. Snakes sometimes drop chicken eggs when killed.
Unknown Creature
A creature found in a garbage bin near a detention area with several holding cells. The creature is inside a bag and twitches very fast, and will die with only one knife slash or bullet wound. It has no method of attacking the player character. If the player observes the bag with the Thermal Scope, the creature within appears to have an extremely high body temperature, which quickly fades after the "bag monster" has been killed. There are two more of these bags in the same area, though they do not move, so it is unclear whether or not they are inhabited by any such creatures. Disturbingly, the P.R.L. 412 (Plaga Removal Laser) does not affect it, suggesting that whatever it is, it is not host to a Plaga parasite.
