In 1980 Sweden adopted equal primogeniture, meaning that the eldest descendants of the monarch, regardless of gender, takes precedence, with children taking precedence over grandchildren. Sweden had previously used a system of Salic law, meaning that females had no automatic right to succession. However, when there was an extinction of male heirs, the monarch was selected through election, which could allow females to rule (such as Queen Ulrika Eleonora). See also: Order of succession
