The levator palpebrae superioris is the muscle in the orbit that elevates the superior (upper) eyelid.
As with most of the muscles of the orbit, it is innervated by the superior division of the oculomotor nerve (Cranial Nerve III). It also relies on innervation from the sympathetic nervous system, (which is carried along with the ophthalmic artery through the cavernous sinus) to maintain rigidity. Damage to some elements of the sympathetic nervous system is therefore shown by a drooping eyelid (ptosis).
The term "superior tarsal muscle" is sometimes used to describe the portion of the muscle which inserts into the superior tarsal plate.
