Kolaghat is situated on the banks of the Rupnarayan River in the Midnapore East district of West Bengal, and is famous for its Hilsa (Ilish) fishes.

It is home to one of the largest thermal power plants in India. This is run by West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) of the West Bengal Government.

The riverside has become a popular picnic spot and is often crowded with people, particularly during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The Hilsa fish harvested from the Rupnarayan River has become quite famous in Bengali cuisine.

In 1998 one of Bengal's top-notch private technological institutions College of Engineering & Management, Kolaghat * was set up here. Till date the college has produced professionals employed with various Government and private organizations in india and abroad.
