Kiyoshi Shiga(志賀 潔 Shiga Kiyoshi, February 7,1871–January 25,1951) was a Japanese physician and bacteriologist.
He is famous for the discovery of shigella in 1897. The bacterium shigella was named therefore after him, as well as the shiga toxin, which is produced by the bacteria.
Dr. Shiga was born in Sendai, Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo (ex-Imperial) in 1896. After the discovery of Shigella, he worked with Paul Ehrlich in Germany (1901-05). After he returned Japan, he resumed the study of infectious diseases with Shibasaburo Kitasato.
