Kino can import raw AVI and DV files, as well as capture footage from digital camcorders using the raw1394 and dv1394 libraries, and export to camcorders using the ieee1394 or video1394 libraries.
Many users have reported problems using Kino's camcorder capabilities. This may be because some device nodes need superuser permission to read/write to.
Kino is popular enough to be included in pre-compiled form within the public package respositories of several Linux distributions, such as Debian, so it may not be necessary to download and compile the source tarball (which is small, less than 2 MB for version 0.9.0.)
