Kinnikuman

Kinnikuman (キン肉マン, literally "muscle man") was a manga created by a group of two Japanese high school students, Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada under the pen name Yudetamago (which literally means "boiled egg" in Japanese). The manga was published in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump.

About Kinnikuman

Originally created as a parody of Ultraman, Kinnikuman was a clumsy goof of a superhero whose services were only called upon to battle monsters if no other superheroes were around. Kinnikuman's powers came from eating garlic, which would gradually fill the "garlic meter" on his forehead until he could grow into a giant to fight the monsters. His main attack was the "Kinniku Flash" beam. As Kinnikuman developed, it began focusing exclusively on professional wrestling in which Kinnikuman would wrestle ridiculous parodies of popular Japanese superheroes and their adversaries, including "The Toilet Paper Mummy", a giant hand, and monsters based on things like pachinko machines and telephones. The heroes and villains of Kinnikuman were collectively referred to as "Chōjin," (超人) which literally translates to "Supermen". The majority of the characters were made by fans who sent in chōjin character designs or ideas and were then incorporated into the story in various major and minor roles. Notable examples of characters created in this manner include Warsman and Brocken Jr. One character that appeared early on for one appearance was Pandaman, who was sent by Eiichirō Oda who'd be later well-known for his manga One Piece. The series was temporarily banned in France after publication mainly because of Brocken Jr., who is a prominent hero and based on the German Nazi (but is not as much a Nazi as his father Brockenman), as the idea of a "good Nazi" was found objectionable.

The story involves Kinnikuman (his real name is Suguru), a clumsy fool of a superhero, finding out he is the missing prince of the planet Kinniku, known for turning out the greatest superheroes in the universe. Being a clumsy fool, however, he must prove himself worthy of the throne. To do so, he enters into wrestling competitions and battles evil Chojin, ultimately culminating in a tournament between Kinnikumn and five pretenders to the throne (Kinnikuman Big Body, Soldier, Zebra, Mariposa, and Super Phoenix). Interestingly, many of Kinnikuman's allies begin as villains (Ramenman, Buffalo Man, Ashuraman, Warsman), or at least extremely arrogant heroes (Terryman, Robin Mask, Rikishiman).

As the popularity increased, an anime came about and lots of merchandising. Amongst the most popular merchandise were the "Kinnikuman Keshigomu": erasers made in the shapes of the Kinnikuman characters. The kids were playing with them as toys and called them "Kin-Keshi" for short. They were subsequently marketed as such, and accessories like a wrestling ring were soon to follow.

The wildly popular Kin-Keshi figurines came to the United States in the mid-1980s under the brand name M.U.S.C.L.E., which stands for "Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere". For this release, Kinnikuman was renamed "Muscle Man", leader of the heroic M.U.S.C.L.E. characters, the "Thug Busters," and Buffaloman was renamed "Teri-Bull" as the leader of the "Cosmic Crunchers" (although in a M.U.S.C.L.E. video game released for the NES, the Japanese names of the other major characters were used). The figures were only available in random assortments, and originally were only available in a sort of fleshy pink, but eventually other colors were used as well. Accessories included a wrestling championship belt that opened up and could be used to carry figures, and a wrestling ring where most of the figures could be squeezed into a pair of plastic clamps and then whacked together using a pair of joysticks. M.U.S.C.L.E. would later inspire a similar American toy, Monster in My Pocket, in which the figures were based on typical western monsters rather than Japanese pro-wrestler parodies.

There have also been numerous Kinnikuman video games, anime, and other toys.

A sequel manga to Kinnikuman, called Kinnikuman II was written by Yudetamago, starring Suguru's son, Mantaro, and currently appears in "Weekly Playboy", a men's magazine published by Shueisha. There have been two "flashback" stories in this manga that feature Terryman and Robin Mask, respectively. Kinnikuman II is known as Ultimate Muscle in most English-speaking countries. Plus after Kinnikuman, there was a spin-off series for the character Ramenman, who was a popular character.

Types of Choujin (Supermen)

Seigi Choujin (正義超人, Justice Supermen)
Choujins who use their powers for good. It's said that there are 1000 on Earth. E.g.: Kinnikuman, Terryman, Robin Mask, Kinnikuman Soldier, Geronimo, most villains who make return appearances.
Especially popular Seigi Choujins are called Idol Choujins.

Weight: 90 kg
Choujin Power: 950,000
Trademark Techniques: 48 Killer Techniques, 52 Clutch Holds, Triple Beefcake (Gory Special, Bow Back Breaker, Back Flip)
First Appearance: American Tour

Kamehame is a legendary choujin, and a parody of King Kamehameha. In all of his 999 matches, he never lost once. At the time of the arc, he lived in Hawaii with Jesse Maivia. At age 80, he is Hawaii's greatest wrestler. He would have gained a 1000th victory but he lost to Jesse. Kinnikuman got to Hawaii and ended up challenging Kamehame because Kamehame agreed to let him fight Jesse if Kinnikuman could get through him. Kinnikuman lost within seconds of the match's start. He defeated Kinnikuman with a somoan back drop hold. Kinnikuman lost but still wanted to challenge Jesse. Jesse was the only man to defeat Kamehame and since Kamehame saw promise in Kinnikuman, Kamehame decided to train Kinnikuman. He taught Kinnikuman the 48 Killer Techniques. When the training was finished, for now, Kinnikuman challenged and defeated Jesse. Kamehame later joined Kinnikuman in the Dream Tag matches since Kinnikuman didn't have a partner. Kamehame sported a Kinniku mask and assumed the name Kinnikuman Great. The two had the name Muscle Brothers. The first match for them was against Pentagon and Black Hole. The Muscle Brothers won the match when they performed the Muscle Docking technique. Kamehame eventually was killed by Sunshine. During the Royal Crown arc, Kamehame returned when Omegaman performed his Omega Metamorphesis technique and had Kamehame's spirit take over his body. Through the course of the match, Kamehame's spirit was too hard for Omegaman to control and Kamehame fully gained control of Omegaman's body. Kamehame finished teaching Kinnikuman Kamehame's 100 Special Techniques, by performing them on Kinnikuman. With the techniques at hand, Kinnikuman beat Omegaman with the Muscle Spark. Theme Song: "Tetsujin Kamehame (Ironman Kamehame)" by Akira Kushida.

Homeland: Hawaii
Age: Unknown
Height: 195 cm
Weight: 110 kg
Choujin Power: 850,000
Trademark Techniques: Move Reversion
First Appearance: American Tour

Jesse was the current champion wrestler in Hawaii. He is the master of move reversion. Move reversion is when there is two opponents and the second opponent launches an attack at opponent 1 uses the force of the other's attack to reverse it back on the one who launched it. When Kin-san got to Hawaii, Jesse was clearly more powerful than him. That was changed when Kamehame taught Kin-san the 48 Killer Techniques. After the training, Jesse was challenged by Kinnikuman. Every attack Kinnikuman initiated was reversed back onto Kinnikuman. Kamehame was ring side to view the match and told Kinnikuman that he would have to "move the mountain". Kinnikuman caught on and realized that since Jesse constantly reversed other people's moves that Jesse himself did not have any moves. Jesse had all his moves reversed back onto him and was finally defeated by Kinnikuman with the Fuu Rin Ka Zan. Thus earning Kinnikuman the Hawaii championship title belt and some money which Kinnikuman returned back to them. This, however, resulted in having Kinnikuman, Meat and Nachiguron swim all the way back home.

He is a parody of Peter Maivia.

Bibinba (ビビンバ) Classification: Seigi Choujin
Homeland: Horumon City, Planet Kinniku
Age: 16 (Throne Arc: 20)
Height: 163 cm
Weight: 43 kg
Choujin Power: 100,000
First Appearance: Return to Planet Kinniku Arc

Bibinba was her father Horumon Yāki's, only hope in defeating his tribe's arch-enemy, the Kinniku clan. Hormone Yāki dispatches his daughter Bibinba to kill the heir to the Kinniku throne, Kinnikuman (who was visiting his parents on Planet Kinniku). Despite being very good in her attempts to kill Kinnikuman, Kinnikuman was just too silly and ignorant of his impending death to actually die. Most of Bibinba's attempts to kill him ended with Kinnikuman helping her which eventually led her to fall in love with him. She travelled back to Earth with Kinnikuman and Meat and was the cause for Mari leaving Japan. After the series Kinnikuman and Bibinba get married, become the King and Queen of Planet Kinniku and have son named Mantaro. She refers to Kinnikuman as "Suguru-sama". Her name is Japanese for bibimbap.
  • The anime version of Kinnikuman seemed to prefer Mari Nikaidō as Kinnikuman's girlfriend over Bibinba. The final episode of Kinnikuman even implies that Bibinba and Super Phoenix got together. This was later rectified in Kinnikuman II or Ultimate Muscle anime where Bibinba was correctly depicted as Kinnikuman's wife.

This including turning Ramenman into a vegetable by stabbing him in the head with his "bear claw". When Kinnikuman fought him in the finals of the Choujin Olympics, Kinnikuman tried to show him that he did not have to kill people and could become a hero. Warsman's computer that allows him to fight and detect his enemies' weak spots only works for thirty minutes at a time and because of that it allowed Kinnikuman to win the fight. After the Choujin Olympics, though, Warsman became good and also is responsible for making Robin Mask a Seigi Choujin. His special move is the Pallo Special, which had also been spelled Paro and Palo. Palo backwards is Olap, which is one of Kevin Mask's specials (taught to him by Warsman). Each of the Seven taking a body part led Kinnikuman on a path to defeat all seven in ten days. Buffaloman's first match was against Warsman, who managed to break off one of his horns, but was wiped out by Buffaloman's superior might. The last battles for Meat's arm and head (a tag-team fight with Kinnikuman and Mongolman versus Buffaloman and Springman) ended with Meat being put back together and Buffaloman wanted to give up being evil due to Kinnikuman's kindness to him during their fight. Buffaloman was later resurrected by Akuma Shogan to serve him and help Ashuraman. During Kinnikuman's battle with Ashuraman, Buffaloman had a complete change of heart and become a seigi choujin for the rest of the series. Dream Choujin Tag Team Chapter

"The Muscle Brothers"
Tag Team of Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman Great. Tag Techniques: Muscle Docking, Buster Variation 5. Combined Choujin Power: 1,900,000.
Kinnikuman Great
(VA: Eiji Kanie and Theme Song; Hideyuki Tanaka *). Because Terryman and his other friends all had their friendship stolen, Kinnikuman went with Kinnikuman Great for a Tag partner during the Dream Tag Tournament. Great was actually Prince Kamehame in disguise. Their first fight was with Black Hole and Pentagon, whom they defeated with their Muscle Docking. After Terryman and Geronimo's fight with Ashuraman and Sunshine, Great was crushed to near death when he fell into Sunshine's Cursed Roller after saving Terry from it. Nonetheless, he competed in their match with Ashuraman and Sunshine, in peak health. During the fight, Great is unmasked and it is revealed that Terry had taken over the identiy for the now dead Kamehame. Together, Suguru and Terry defeated Ashuraman and Sunshine and eventually Neptuneman and Big the Budō as well. Theme Song: "Idai no Tamashii (Great Soul)" by Akira Kushida.
"20 Million Powers"
Tag Team of Mongolman (Ramenman) and Buffaloman. Their name comes from the fact that Buffaloman has a 10,000,000 power level and Mongolman knows 10,000,000 techniques. Tag Techniques: Long Horn Train, Power Up Hurricane Mixer. Combined Choujin Power: 10,970,000.
"Choujin Master/Student Combo"
Tag Team of Robin Mask and Warsman. Tag Technique: Tag Formation A. Combined Choujin Power: 1,960,000.
"New Machineguns"
Tag Team of Terryman and Geronimo. Tag Technique: Hell's Tornado Return. Combined Choujin Power: 1,780,000.
"Stray Devil Knights"
Tag Team of Ashuraman and Sunshine. Tag Techniques: Hell's Combination I & II. Combined Choujin Power: 17,000,000.
"4D Killer Combo"
Tag Team of Black Hole and Pentagon. They jumped and replaced Curry Cook and Skyman before the Tournament even started. They lost the first match to the Muscle Brothers. Combined Choujin Power: 2,700,000.
"Most Dangerous Combo"
Tag Team of Brocken Jr. and Wolfman. They were jumped and taken out during their first match (against the 20 Million Powers) by Screw Kid and Kendaman. Combined Choujin Power: 1,700,000.
"Big Bombers"
Tag Team of Canadianman and Specialman. They were taken out before the tournament even started by the Stray Devil Knights. Combined Choujin Power: 1,650,000.
"Perfect Supermen Scout Patrol"
Tag Team of Screw Kid and Kendaman. Tag Technique: Hellish Screw. Combined Choujin Power: 28,000,000.
Screw Kid
(VA: Kaneto Shiozawa). Origin: Nevada. Screw Kid was one of the Perfect Chojin who served Big the Budo, and he and Kendaman crashed the tag championships, wiping out Brocken Jr. and Wolfman. However, they lost their next match against Buffaloman and Mongolman. Fearing death for his failure, Screw Kid attacked Big the Budo to try to save his own life but was crumbled to dust by his master's power. He had the power to extend sharp drill bits from his hands and knees. Theme Song: "Kyoufu no Kaiten Doriru (Dreaded Spinning Drill)" by Takayuki Miyauchi. Trademark Techniques: Four Point Screw Torture.
Kendaman
(VA: Masashi Hirose). Kendaman was Screw Kid's partner, and his special ability was using his head (attached to one wrist by a chain) as a smashing weapon. In their combination attack he would jump on top of Screw Kid as they came down and use his massive weight to drive Screw Kid's spikes deeper into their victims. After losing to Buffaloman and Mongolman, he tried to run away but was caught and killed by Neptuneman. Theme Song: "Kiken da Kiken da Kendaman (Danger! Danger! Kendaman)" by Mu Arakawa. Trademark Techniques: Kendaman Headbutt.
"Hell Missionaires"
Tag team of Neptuneman and Big the Budo. Tag Techniques: Cross Bomber, Face Bomber, Mask the End, Hell's Triple Sentence. Combined Choujin Power: 78,000,000
Neptuneman
(VA: Kazuhiko Kishino in Kinnikuman; Yukitoshi Hori in Kinnikuman: Scramble for the Throne). Homeland: England. Age: 26. Height: 240 cm. Weight: 210 kg. Choujin Power: 28,000,000. Neptuneman was originally a Perfect Choujin from England known as Kenkaman (Quarrelman). As such, he wasn't interested in winning or losing matches as long as he fought opponents who could challenge him. Unable to find any such matches, he tried to commit suicide by diving into a river, only to stumble onto the resting place of the Great Neptune King, another Perfect Choujin, who rechristened Kenkaman as Neptuneman, and himself Big the Budo. Wearing special masks that gave them magnetic powers, they fought their way to the final round of the Dream Tag Tournament against Kinnikuman and Terryman, but Neptuneman turned against Big the Budo when he tried to use a sword against their opponents, breaking one of the sacred rules of Perfect Choujin. After losing to Kin and Terry, Neptuneman flew into space and blew himself up to signal Big the Budo's incoming Perfect Choujin henchmen to retreat. During the tournament against the Princes of Fate, Neptuneman escaped from the afterlife and fought on Kinnikuman's team disguised as The Samurai. He was modeled after American wrestler Hulk Hogan. Theme Song: "Mukan no Teiou (Uncrowned Emperor)" by Norimasa Yamanaka. Trademark Techniques: Quarrel Bomber, Quarrel Special, Double Leg Suplex, Magnetic Storm Driver, Sleeper Suplex, Robin Special.

Survivor Match for the Kinniku Throne

"Kinnikuman's Team"
Kinnikuman
Meat
Weak little Meat was a member of Kinnikuman's team because the rest of his allies were missing in action or belonged to other teams. Meat fought in one battle in the whole series and that was against Mixer Taitei defeating him with a backdrop. He started to fight in a second match against the Manriki but it was interrupted by Warsman who defeated the Manriki and won the match for Kinnikuman's team (it could be said that Warsman was a charter member of Kinnikuman's team).
Terryman
Robin Mask
Ramenman
Warsman
Terryman, Meat and Warsman were out of commission for the final battle. Their replacements were Geronimo and The Samurai, who was really Neptuneman.
"Solider Team'" (The Solider team that actually fought)
Kinniku Ataru
(VA: Shigeru Chiba; Eiji Takemoto in Kinnikuman Nisei). Homeland: Planet Kinniku, Age: 29, Height: 197 cm, Weight: 102 kg, Choujin Power: 1,080,000. Suguru's elder brother. Ataru hated the spartan upbringing of his father and ran away from home at an early age. When he returned, he killed Kinnikuman Soldier and assumed his identity. To this day in the Kinnikuman II manga, he still wears the Soldier outfit, so some refer to him as Kinnikuman Soldier II. He was teamed with Suguru to form the "No Questions Asked Siblings". Trademark Techniques: Napalm Stretch, Face Flash, Ataru's Muscle Spark, Dragon Suplex.
Brocken Jr.
The Ninja
Buffaloman
Ashuraman

"Phoenix Team"

The Intellect Team
Mammothman
(VA: Masaharu Satou). Homeland: Siberia, Eurasia. Height: 279 cm; Weight: 400 kg; Choujin Power: 78,000,000. A mammoth choujin. His Big Tusks had a mind of their own and would seek out blood. This ultimately led to his own defeat when Robin Mask let his blood sprinkle over Mammothman himself, and his Big Tusks impaled him. Robin defeated Mammothman, although Super Phoenix arguably had the last laugh, as both of them lost their pages from the Muscle Prophecy Book and disappeared at the end of the match. Trademark Techniques: Powerful Nose Breaker, Nose Fencing, Ice Rock Gyro.
Satan Cross
(VA: Hidetoshi Nakamura). Homeland: Demon Realm; Height: 235 cm; Weight: 250 kg; Choujin Power: 47,000,000. Formerly known as Samson Teacher, Ashuraman's trainer. He fused with the devil to become a four-armed centaur Choujin. In his first fight he killed The Ninja. He then fought and killed his own student Ashuraman. In the final round he took on Suguru in a Special Armor Death Match. Suguru defeated him with a Muscle Spark. Trademark Techniques: Rising Technique Triangle Dreamer, Miracle Sheet, Escape Water, Choujin Floater, Break Dance Shoot.
Prisman
(VA: Ken Yamaguchi and then Ryōichi Tanaka). Homeland: Antarctica; Height: 304 cm; Weight: 200 kg; Choujin Power: 52,000,000. A prism choujin. Could fire a beam that could destroy any Chojin, which he demonstrated on Kinnikuman Zebra after Zebra lost to Suguru. Brocken Jr. turned himself into an ordinary human to avoid this, but died. Prism Man was finally put out of action in a match with Ramenman. Trademark Techniques: Rainbow Shower, Canvas Saucer, Canvas Shuriken.
The Omegaman
(VA: Ken Yamaguchi). Homeland: Omega Centauri; Height: 231 cm; Weight: 208 kg; Choujin Power: 86,000,000. Originally one of Neptune King's Perfect Choujin. The Omegaman was a bounty hunter from Enma Daio. He ostensibly recovered many Choujins who escaped from Hell including Screw Kid, Junkman, Atlantis, Sunshine and Sneagator, and during the survivor series his mission was to retrieve Neptuneman. While on Earth, he joined Phoenixman's team during the royal crown saga. Omegaman defeated Geronimo with the Omega Catastrophe Drop which resulted in a tag match, Neptuneman and Kinnikuman vs. Omegaman and Phoenixman. The match was for each person's page in the muscle prophecy book. The pages were tied to a string which hung over a torch. Neptuneman ended up losing his page and dying. This pitted Kinnikuman and Omegaman against each other. Omegaman used his Omega Metamorphesis technique which turned him into Prince Kamehame. Through the course of the match, Kamehame's spirit took over and he finished teaching Kinnikuman the Kamehame 100 Special Techniques. With those techniques at hand, Kinnikuman turned Omegaman back into himself and defeated Omegaman with the Muscle Spark. Trademark Techniques: Omega Metamorphosis, Omega Catastrophe Drop.
Super Phoenix
(VA: Michihiro Ikemizu). Homeland: Sirloin Village, Planet Kinniku; Age: 24; Height: 190 cm; Weight: 114 kg; Choujin Power: 100,000,000. Another Kinniku challenger to the throne. There was a fire in the hospital the day of Suguru's, Phoenixman's, Big Body's, Mariposa, and Zebra's births. Which may have caused a mix-up in babies. At this point in the tournament it does not matter as Suguru is the true/accepted heir to the throne. But growing up Phoenixman believed that he was the heir to the throne and hoped to be taken away from the poor existence he led. As a child he did not have friends and was very lonely and hoped that the Royal Kinniku family would take him away from his life. Phoenixman almost had the chance to become the heir to the throne due to a tournament that would allow a challenger to become heir. But due to the death of his father he missed out on the chance. Since the acting King was Tone the pig in the beginning of the story it is believed that Tone won the tournament. He hates Kinnikuman because Kinnikuman not only grew up rich but is the heir to the throne (wheather or not he knew that Kinnikuman was left on Earth and grew up alone is not truly known even though Kinnikuman tries to explain it to him saying that he was not unlike Phoenixman). Phoenixman was chosen by the Chisei no Kami to be their fighter and he become Super Phoenix. Kinnikuman beat him with a complete Muscle Spark. Trademark Techniques: Muscle Revenger, Raging Ox, Psycho Phoenix Wave. Tag Technique with Mammothman and Prisman: Choujin Decoration Tree.
"Big Body Team"
The Strength Team
Pinchman
Pinchman was a chojin with a plier-like head and hands. He fought Mammothman and was killed in a matter of seconds.
Leopardon
A tank-like chojin who carged into the ring with Mammothman to avenge Pinchman, and lasted about as long.
Golemman
A large brick-like chojin from Israel. Mammoth brutally killed him too, sticking Golemman's head into the mat and twisting until it snapped off.
Cannonballer
Big Body
Homeland: Canada, originally Planet Kinniku. Choujin Power: 100,000,000. Big Body was chosen by the God of Strength to oppose Kinnikuman's bid for the throne. He fought Kinnikuman Super Phoenix and was quickly killed.

"Mariposa Team"

The Flight Team
The Hawkman
(VA: Sho Hayami). Homeland: France, Age: 18, Height: 206 cm, Weight: 110 kg, Choujin Power: 5,200,000.
Mister VTR
(VA: Toshio Kobayashi). Homeland: Silicon Valley, Age: 31, Height: 190 cm, Weight: 790 kg, Choujin Power: 2,800,000.
Mixer Taitei
(VA: Yasuhiko Kawazu). Homeland: Japan, Age: 20, Height: 245 cm, Weight: 700 kg, Choujin Power: 7,000,000. Mixer Taitei was a blender choujin. He fought Kinnikuman and stole his Burning Inner Strength. He then fought Meat, and was shattered when Meat backdropped him. Trademark Techniques: Power Seperator Blender, Elbow Drop.
King the 100-Ton
(VA: Kazuo Oka). Homeland: Detroit, Michigan, USA, Age: 20, Height: 270 cm, Weight: 20~40~80~100t, Choujin Power: 10,000,000. King the 100-Ton was the heaviest character in the series, although he could also change his density to almost nothing if he desired, and change his body into a variety of shapes (a barbell, sprouting spikes, etc.). He fought Terryman and very nearly beat him, but was ultimately smashed to pieces. Trademark Techniques: Jet Roller See-Saw.
Mariposa
(VA: Masaharu Satou). Homeland: Mexico City, Mexico (originally Planet Kinniku), Age: 24, Height: 185 cm, Weight: 100 kg, Chojin power: 100,000,000. Kinnikuman Mariposa was chosen by the God of Agility to compete with Kinnikuman for the throne of Planet Kinniku. As a child he had stolen the Anoaro Staff from the Robin family and put it to use in his match against Robin Mask, but was beaten. Trademark Techniques: Mokutesma Defense, Aztec Drop, Fake Muscle Revenger.

"Zebra Team"

The Technique Team
The Manriki (The Vice)
(VA: Masaharu Satou). Homeland: Sweden, Height: 250 cm Weight: 500 kg, Choujin Power: 7,210,000. Fought Meat during the Tournament and was winning easily, but the ring was right above a portal to the afterlife and just as the Manriki was about to drop Meat into it Warsman came through and saved him. Although there was a bit of confusion (Warsman had lost part of his memory and attacked Kinnikuman thinking they were archenemies still), Warsman proceeded to defeat the Manriki. Trademark Techniques: Scramble Vice.
Motorman
(VA: Yasuhiko Kawazu). Homeland: France, Age: 23, Height: 190 cm, Weight: 210 kg, Choujin Power: 4,600,000. Motorman was a Robo Choujin with a drill for a head and batteries for forearms. He easily took out Warsman and Terryman but was eventually ripped apart by Ramenman's Camel Clutch. Trademark Techniques: Battery Claw, Drill A Hole Spark.

Originally Powerfulman, Zebra was chosen by the God of Technique to oppose Kinnikuman's bid for the throne. He had Zebra stripes that controlled his peronallity (white meant Clean Fighter, black meant Rough Fighter). Kinnikuman defeated him with an Incomplete Muscle Spark. Trademark Techniques: Muscle Inferno, Saint Muscle Punch, Mephisto Punch, Goodbye Kinniku Driver, Canvas Presser (Tag technique with Parthenon).

Muscle Returns

Muscle Returns (マッスル・リターンズ, 1996, Kakutou Ace, Kadokawa Shoten) was a one-shot follow up story set 8 years after Kinnikuman's conclusion. In it, a very powerful Choujin named Buki Boy bursts onto the scene and easily takes out Warsman, Terryman, and Buffaloman, leading to a climatic show down with Kinnikuman. The story contained a few inconsistencies with Kinnikuman Nisei (which began publication two years later), one of which being the appearance of a young Kevin Mask. His mask was different, resembling his father's, and according to his starting age in Nisei (14) he shouldn't have even been born when this story takes place.

The manga was edited/fixed and re-released in 2006. Kevin Mask's look was changed into that of a little boy in school clothes, rather than looking like he was 14 with Robin's armor. Meat, who was susposed to be in suspended animation while the story took place, was replaced by Geronimo.

Buki Boy (BUKIボーイ) Classification: Zangyaku Choujin
Homeland: Brazil
Choujin Power: Unknown
Trademark Techniques: Buki Thunder Hammer Drop, Bewitching Eyelids, Choking Sleeper
First Appearance: Muscle Returns

A very powerful Choujin who bursts onto the scene and easily takes out Warsman, Terryman, and Buffaloman. He is eventually defeated by Kinnikuman.

Celebrity Appearances

Manga to Anime Changes

  • Robin Mask's skin color was changed from flesh-colored to blue. Likewise, Ashuraman's was changed from blue to flesh-colored.
  • In the manga, the announcer's eventually fade into the background until there's just one and he's only represented by speech bubbles appearing in the corners of the panels. In the anime, however, the announcers are always seen. Also, the color commentator Tazahama is replaced by Nakano-san.
  • The more violent scenes have been toned down. For instance, the infamous scene in the first Olympics where Ramenman rips Brockenman in half with the Camel Clutch has been changed to him merely breaking Brockenman's back (still killing him, though) and then turning him into ramen noodles which he then eats.
  • The Dream Tag Tournament is followed by two anime original story arcs: The Psycho Choujin arc and the Heinous Choujin arc.
  • In the manga there are very obvious hints that Mongolman is actually Ramenman in disguise (such as Mongolman removing his mask and fake upper-body muscles while walking off into the distance). In the anime these hints are missing.
  • Originally, Kinnikuman meets Bibinba and they fall in love, causing Kinnikuman's first love interest, Mari Nikaidou, to leave Japan. After the series ends, Kinnikuman and Bibinba get married. In the anime, Mari stays around as Kinnikuman's main love interest with Bibinba only playing a very small role in the final storyline.
  • The American Tour arc is shortened to only include the fight with Jesse Maivia, the American Tag Tournament, and the rematch with Robin Mask. The second Monster Extermination saga is scrapped completely.
  • Certain names were changed, including: Abdullah→ Abdoodoollah, Beauty Rhodes→ Beauty Rorodes, Wolfman→ Rikishiman and others. This was done to avoid legal dispute with the real-life wrestlers who used these names (Abdullah the Butcher, Dusty Rhodes, Chiyonofuji Mitsugu, and others). Some move names were changed as well, like: Niku Curtain→ Kinniku Guard and Apache War Cry→ Wild War Cry (Scramble for the Throne only).

Brocken Jr.'s trademark attack. A hand chop that actually cuts the opponent's flesh
Black Fog of Hamburg (ハンブルグの黒い霧 Hanburugu no Kuroi Kiri)

Rubik's Cube Twist (ルービックキューブ張り手 Ruubikku Kyuubu Harite)
Wolfman's trademark attack. He hand slaps his opponent in the face so much that their head swells up like a Rubik's Cube.
Choujin 102 Attacks (超人一〇二芸, Choujin Ichimaruni Gei)
Used by Ramenman. This collection of martial arts techniques originates from Ramenman's spinoff series Tatakae!! Ramenman, but became so popular that Yudetamago began using it in Kinnikuman as well. In Kinnikuman Nisei it is established that these techniques are now Ramenman's main finishing moves.
Screw Driver (スクリュードライバー)
Used by Warsman. Warsman does a spinning horizontal leap towards his opponent, slicing them up with his exposed Bear Claws.
Hurricane Mixer (ハリケーンミキサー)
Buffaloman's trademark attack. Buffaloman charges at his opponent and knocks them up into the air with his Long Horns. The victim spins as he falls back to the ground.
Quarrel Bomber (喧嘩(クォーラル) ボンバー)
Neptuneman's trademark attack. A running clothesline fusing together Neptuneman's massive arms and his Magnet Power. While posing as The Samurai during the Royal Rumble for the Kinniku Throne he called it the Iai Kiri Bomber.

Throwing Techniques

Gassho Hineri (合掌ひねり)
Used by Wolfman. Wolfman grabs his opponent by the head with both hands and throws them out of the ring. He first used it on Cubeman during the 21st Choujin Olympics.
Choujin Cross Slam (超人十字架落とし Choujin Juujika Otoshi)
Used by Buffaloman. Facing his opponent, Buffaloman grabs him by the wrists and holds his arms up. He then brings the victim chest to chest with, jumps up into the air, and drives him head first into the canvas. This move was used multiple times against Mammothman during the Royal Rumble for the Kinniku Throne.
Double Leg Suplex (ダブル・レッグ・スープレックス)
Used by Neptuneman. Neptuneman knocks his opponent into the ropes (usually with the Quarrel Bomber), and as the victim flies back at him (back facing him), he grabs him around the torso, forcing his back into the spikes on his vest. He then grabs the victim by the underside of the calfs, flips back, and slams him back first into the canvas. He first used this on Warsman during the Dream Tag Tournament.
Back Flip (バックフリップ)
Used by Kamehame. Kamehame used this move to defeat Kinnikuman at their first meeting. It is the final part in his "Triple Beefcake" combo.

Slamming Techniques

Kinniku Buster (キン肉バスター)
Kinnikuman's trademark technique. Suguru places his opponent's neck on his shoulder and grabs him by the feet. He then launches up into the air and slams back down to the ground on his butt. The move's typical affect is a broken back, shattered hips, and a torn groin. Suguru first used this move against Warsman and went on to use it to gain victories against SteCase King, Atlantis, Buffaloman, and Mr. VTR. Both Buffaloman and Ashuraman found weaknesses in it and developed their own versions.
Kinniku Driver (キン肉ドライバー)
Used by Kinnikuman. While in midair, Suguru grabs his opponents ankles and rest his feet on the underside of his arms. He then proceds to ride the victim neck and shoulders first down to the canvas. He used it to destroy Akuma Shogun and later Hawkman as well.
Muscle Spark (マッスルスパーク)
Kinnikuman's ultimate technique.
Muscle Inferno (マッスル・インフェルノ)
Kinnikuman Zebra's trademark technique. With his opponent falling facedown towards the canvas, Zebra jumps up vertically and does a spinning dropkick to his opponent's chest. He then quickly flips up and over his opponent and kicks them in the back of the neck area, driving them into the wall.
Muscle Revenger (マッスル・リベンジャー)
Kinnikuman Super Phoenix's trademark technique. With his opponent falling upside down towards the canvas, Phoenix jumps up and headbutts them sending them flying up and then down again. He does this multiple times and then finally jumps up after his opponent. He then gets behind his upside down opponent, grabs their wrists, hooks their ankles with his legs, and drives them shoulder-area first into (usually) the corner post. A phony version of this is used by Mariposa, in which he jumps into the air, dives down, and headbutts his opponent multiple times, slowly imbedding them into the ring.
Calf Branding (カーフ・ブランディング)
Used by Terryman. Terry runs up behind his opponent, strikes their neck with his knee, and drives them into the canvas. He used this technique to defeat Skull Boze and later to shatter King the 100 Ton.
Robin Special (ロビンスペシャル)
Used by Robin Mask.
Kowloon Wall Drop (九龍城落地 (ガウロンセンドロップ), Gauron Sen Doroppu)
Used by Ramenman. Ramenman sends his opponent into the air and then jumps up after him. He grabs the victim by the leg and places him on his shoulders. He then flips upside down and drives his opponent head first into the canvas. He used this technique to defeat Bikeman.
Ashura Buster (阿修羅バスター)

Hell's Guillotine (地獄の断頭台 Jigoku no Dantoudai)
Akuma Shogun's trademark technique.
Mountain Drop (マウンテン・ドロップ)
The Mountain's trademark technique. It's nothing more than a common Body Splash. What makes it so special is that Mountain weighs about 1,000kgs.

Texas Clover Hold (テキサスクローバーホールド)
Used by Terryman. Another nod to Terry Funk.
Tower Bridge (タワーブリッジ)
Robin Mask's trademark technique. A stronger version of the Argentine Back Breaker. Notable victims include Kinnikuman, Atlantis, Junkman, Parthenon, and Mammothman.
Camel Clutch (キャメル・クラッチ)
Ramenman's trademark technique. He used it to rip Brokenman and (much later) Motorman in half.

The trademark technique of the Hell Missionaries (Neptuneman and Big the Budou). The two of them simultaneously clothesline the same opponent (Neptuneman from the front, Budou from the back). Kinnikuman and Robin Mask (as Blue Impulse) also used this move but called it the "Japanese/English Bomber".

Muscle Docking (マッスル・ドッキング)
The trademark technique of the Muscle Brothers (Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman Great). Kinnikuman does a Kinniku Buster on one opponent while Great (Kamehame and later Terryman) does a Kinniku Driver on the other opponent. The "docking" part comes from the fact that Kinnikuman is actually sitting on Great's shoulders during the technique.
4D Cross (四次元交差, Yojigen Kousa)
The trademark move of the 4D Killer Combo (Black Hole and Pentagon).
Rainbow Bridge Suplex (レインボーブリッジスープレックス)
Used by the Ganryu Island Combo (Kinnikuman and The Samurai).
Long Horn Train (ロングホーン・トレイン)
The trademark technique of the 20 Million Powers (Mongolman and Buffaloman). Mongolman and Buffalomna stand back to back. Mongolman then hooks Buffalomans arms and carries him on his back. He then bends forward and charges towards the opponents. Buffaloman's Long Horn then grows, impaling the opponents.

Suguru first puts his opponent in a double underhook position, spins him around, throwing him from arm to arm, and slams him into the canvas (風 Fuu, "Blow Like the Wind"). He then grabs his opponent under his arm and jumps into the air, flipping himself and the victim around until he has him in a piledriver hold. (林 Rin, "Silent Like the Forest"). With his opponent in a piledriver hold, Suguru drives him into the canvas (火 Ka, "Conquer Like the Fire"). Finally, he throws his opponent into the air, jumps up after him, cathes him in a Reverse Romero Special, and falls back to the canvas (山 Zan, "Immovable Like the Mountain"). He used this technique to defeat Jesse Maivia.
Apache War Cry (アパッチの雄叫び Apatchi no Otakebi)
Geronimo's trademark technique. Geronimo cries his battle cry (U-Ra-Ra!!) so loudly that it creates shockwaves. He used this technique to defeat sand brick behemoth Sunshine, whose weakness was loud noises. In the second anime it was called the Yasei no Otakebi (Wild War Cry).
Hell's Tornado (竜巻地獄 Tatsumaki Jigoku)
Ashuraman's trademark technique. Ashuraman throws a punch with three of his arms simultaneously, creating a small tornado.
