Kerplunk! is the punk rock band Green Day's second full-length album and was released in 1992 on the Lookout! Records label. As of June 2005, Kerplunk! has sold 680,000 units in the US, and is certified platinum worldwide. CD and Cassette versions of the album include Green Day's earlier Sweet Children EP, recorded in 1990 by Skene! Records.

In August 2005, Green Day pulled its pre-1994 music catalog from Lookout, reportedly due to unpaid royalties. It is not yet known whether or not there are plans to repress the album. However, the album is still in print in Europe, as there it has been distributed by Epitaph Europe

    Notable songs

    "2000 Light Years Away"

The song was written by Billie Joe after the first time he kissed his girlfriend, and future wife, Adrienne. Billie Joe wrote this song about having to be away from Adrienne, how much he would miss her, and how he felt as if he were "2000 Light years away" from her.

The track was later remixed by Dookie producer Rob Cavallo and mixer Jerry Finn and released on The Jerky Boys Movie soundtrack in 1995. Also, a live version of this song appeared on the UK Basket Case single.

    "Dominated Love Slave"

"Dominated Love Slave" is the infamous sixth track on Kerplunk. The lyrics and music were written by Green Day's then recently added drummer, Trè Cool, which is not typical for a Green Day song. Trè Cool also sang the song instead of Billie Joe, which is not typical as well. The lyrics are usually written by Billie Joe Armstrong and the music is written by the band as a whole. Green Day has written two very similar songs, Like a Rat Does Cheese and Blood, Sex And Booze

The music in "Dominated Love Slave" is different from Green Day's usual punk/pop-punk style; in fact, the song is a parody of Blue Grass music. Throughout the song there are several stereotypical redneck related sounds in the background, such as "Yee-Ha!" and a mumbling of "pick-up truck". The lyrics are all about having kinky bondage sex with whipping, spanking, and staples.

A similar song, "Like a Rat Does Cheese", was also written by Trè Cool. It is also a parody of bluegrass music, but is written about the pleasure of fellatio rather than kinky sex. In fact, one line of the lyrics goes "Nibble on my dick like a rat does cheese." The song has only known to have been performed once: Tre sang and played guitar for the song during a radio interview on the Washington DC alternative rock radio station "DC 101". The song is not on any of their albums, EPs, singles, or any other official recordings, but can be found at Green Day Authority.

The song "Blood, Sex And Booze" from Green Day's sixth album is also about kinky sex like "Dominated Love Slave", though it's more about S&M specifically. An example of the lyrics goes "I won't dare move/For the pain she puts me through/ is what I need/So make it bleed." The lyrics also make mention of a mistress, handcuffs, and willingly being thrown to dogs to let them "eat my flesh down to the wood". However, despite having a similar meaning, it does not have a country style like "Dominated Love Slave" had.

    "Welcome to Paradise"

Kerplunk included an earlier version on track three of Green Day's future hit song "Welcome to Paradise", which was later re-recorded for the album Dookie. The two versions of the songs are nearly identical, with the exception of the Dookie version being a little faster paced than the Kerplunk! version, using notably better recording technology and being fourteen seconds longer.

    Trivia

    • Tré has been quoted numerous times as saying that he "really, really likes Kerplunk".
    • At the end of the song "Private Ale" you can hear someone counting from 1 - 10.
    • Holden Caulfield from the title of the song "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?" is the main character from the book The Catcher in the Rye, meaning that the answer to the question "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?" would be J. D. Salinger. Screeching Weasel has a song called "I Wrote Holden Caulfield."
    • At the beginning of "My Generation" Billie Joe can be heard saying "I think I can do The Who".
