Kentucky Lake is the largest artificial lake east of the Mississippi River in the United States, created by the impoundment of the Tennessee River by Kentucky Dam. It provides a source for hydro-electric power and is a recreational magnet in southern Kentucky and western Tennessee. The lake extends for 180 miles (290 km) to the south and covers over 160,000 acres (650 km²).

The tailwaters of Kentucky Lake are considered one of the best blue catfish fisheries in the country, with record class fish taken on a year round basis.
