Kavirajamarga (850AD) is the first extant literary work in the Kannada language. It is ascribed to early 9th century Rashtrakuta king Nripatunga Amoghavarsha I and famous Kannada poet Sri Vijaya Ponna of those times. The name literally means Royal Path for Poets. This work refers to earlier writers in Kannada like SriVijaya, Vimalodaya, Nagarjuna, Jayabandhu and King Durvinita, two earlier but prominent works of Chattana and Bedande. But the works and compositions of these authors are yet to be discovered. Kavirajamarga was a formative in the literary growth of Kannada and a guide book on Kannada grammar that existed in that period. It laid the royal road of guiding many aspiring writers.
