Karshi-Khanabad is an airbase in south-eastern Uzbekistan leased by the government of Uzbekistan to the United States. The U.S. has used the base, also known as K2, since 2001 to support missions against al-Qaeda in neighboring Afghanistan. On July 29, 2005, amid strained relations caused by the May 2005 unrest in Uzbekistan, the U.S. was told to vacate the base within six months.
