Dr. Julian Subatoi Bashir (played by Alexander Siddig) is a character on Deep Space Nine.
Born: unknown Assumed: Britain (Accent; and interest in "The Battle of Britain")
A "genetically enhanced" human, Julian Bashir is Chief Medical Officer of Deep Space Nine and the USS Defiant.
As a child, Bashir was supposedly mildly retarded. His parents illegally had him subjected to genetic engineering, with the goal of making him not only "normal", but "superior". The procedure worked, though an entirely new person was born (at least as far as Bashir himself was concerned). Widespread fear of genetic engineering throughout the Federation, combined with the procedure's illegality, led him to keep this a secret throughout most of his adult life.
Bashir finished second at Starfleet Medical, although he purposely missed a question on his final exam in hopes of hiding his genetic alterations. He was then given his choice assignment on the former Cardassian space station, Terok Nor, renamed Deep Space Nine, giving him the opportunity to practice "frontier medicine." He was one of the few crew members assigned to the station that was initially happy to be there. At first his overly enthusiastic, self-important nature made him disliked but he eventually became dear friends with much of the crew, especially Miles O'Brien, Jadzia Dax, and Elim Garak.
During pre-Dominion war tensions, Bashir was kidnapped and sent to a Dominion prison camp along with General Martok and Garak's mentor and father, Enabran Tain. He was replaced with a shapeshifter during this time, who attempted to destroy the Bajoran sun, wiping out Bajor, DS9, as well as the Federation, Klingon, and Romulan fleets without firing a shot. The plan was foiled by the USS Defiant, under the command of Major Kira Nerys. Eventually, the real Bashir, and Martok were able to escape.
Bashir's genetically-engineered status was accidentally revealed by his parents. Once his secret was discovered he offered to resign his commission. His parents, unwilling to see their son's career ruined, went to Captain Benjamin Sisko and told him everything. When Julian arrived to give up his commission, he was informed that his father had agreed to serve two years in prison on the condition that Julian would be allowed to keep his commission and medical practice. Since then, Bashir has been treated somewhat differently, but not much.
Starfleet later asked Bashir to help integrate several other illegally genetically-engineered individuals into Federation culture. Section 31 had also become interested in him and tried to recruit him against his will several times, but failed.
At the end of the series, Bashir is one of the officers remaining on Deep Space Nine, where he is free to pursue a newfound relationship with Ezri Dax.
