John Gross is an English literary author. He served as the editor of the Times Literary Supplement from 1974 to 1981 and is currently theatre critic of ''The Sunday Telegraph.

His books include the New Oxford Book of English Prose, The Rise and Fall of the Man of Letters and The Oxford Book of Aphorisms. He also edits collections of essays, and in 2002 he was the editor of The Oxford Book of Essays.
