Jayapura City (Indonesian: Kota Jayapura) is the capital of Papua province, Indonesia, on the island of New Guinea. The approximate population in 2002 was 200,000.

History

From 1910 to 1962 the city was known as Hollandia and was the capital of a district of the same name in the northeast of West New Guinea. In 1945 the Dutch made it the capital of Netherlands New Guinea. After the handing over of Netherlands New Guinea to the UN it became Kota Baru from October 1, 1962 and then, when Indonesia took control over the territory on May 1, 1963; it became Sukarnopura till the end of 1968; before acquiring its present name. The literal meaning of this name is 'City of Victory' (Sanskrit Jaya: "Victory", Pura: "City")

Sited on Teluk Yos Sudarso (then known as Humboldt Bay) the area saw considerable activity during World War II. Occupied by the Japanese in April 1942, it was liberated by U.S. forces on April 22 1944. A U.S. Navy base was established there on June 7, 1944. The area served as General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters until the conquest of the Philippines in March 1945.
