Edmund Jacobson back in the 1920s argued that since muscular tension accompanies anxiety, one might be able to reduce anxiety by learning how to relax the muscular tension.
Jacobson trained his patients to voluntarily relax certain muscles in their body in order to reduce anxiety symptoms. He also found that relaxation procedure effective with ulcers, insomnia, and hypertension.
Jacobson's Progressive Relaxation is still popular with modern therapists.
