Isla de Alborán is a tiny island on the Alborán Sea, located about 1/3 of the way from Morocco to Spain (about 50 km from Ras Tleta Madari). A Spanish possession since 1540, it is home today to a small Spanish Navy garrison and an automated lighthouse. Claimed by Morocco along with: Islas Chafarinas, Melilla, Peñón de Alhucemas, Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, and Ceuta.

General Data

  • Location:

  • Area: About 71.200 m². Near the island there is another one called Cloud Islet (islote de La Nube).

  • Altitude: The island is a flat platform about 15 m above the sea level.

  • Curiosities: Due to its strategic value, about 1960, a few supposed fishing vessels from the Soviet Union tried to install a stable base in the island. For this reason the Spanish army established a settlement in Alborán for its control and protection.
