In politics, the term independent voter typically refers to a voter who is not affiliated with a political party, although the term is often used more broadly to include minor party voters as well. In the US, the overwhelming majority of independents are not affiliated with any party. While many political pundits believe that independents either hold centrist views or views that are not properly represented by the major political platforms, in polls many independents state that they identify as independents because the Democratic and Republican Parties are too partisan and/or governed by special interests. While as of 2006 approximately 38% of Americans identify as independents in national polls, independent representatives comprise a very small minority of Congress.
