Impossible Creatures is a real time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment in conjunction with Microsoft Game Studios. Its unique feature is that the armies used are all created by the player. The armies consist of 9 creatures; each one is a combination of any two animals from a list of over 70, resulting in a total number of 127,392 possible combinations. Many animals have inherent abilities to add more strategic depth to the game. There is an extensive single-player campaign as well as online multiplayer functionality with different gametypes, add-ons, custom maps, mods, and scenarios.

Impossible Creatures was followed up later by a free downloadable expansion entitled 'Insect Invasion' which added new creatures and abilities to the game. The last official add on for Impossible Creatures was released in 2004. Relic has stated that they have no further plans for the Impossible Creatures universe.

Plot

In 1937, Dr. Eric Chanikov, working in exile in his laboratory located at a chain of remote islands, develops the Sigma technology, a method which makes it possible to create new creatures from combining two normal animals.

Rex Chance (real surname Chanikov), a former war reporter, travels to the archipelago after his father, Dr. Chanikov sends him a letter. There he meets Dr. Lucy Willing, his father's assistant, and finds out that his father was killed. This turns out to be the work of the evil tycoon Upton Julius, who – fascinated by the power of the Sigma technology – attempts to use it to take over the world.

Rex and Lucy defeat Julius' henchmen (Whitey Hooten, Velika la Pette, Dr. Ganglion) using the Sigma technology and help from the local populace, before confronting Julius in the finale. It turns out that Rex was the first product of the Sigma technology, which gave him superhuman abilities.
