}} "Hips Don't Lie" is a latin-pop song performed by Colombian singer Shakira. The song was written by Wyclef Jean (who is a featured artist on the song), although Shakira assisted in writing and producing. The song was released as the second single from Shakira's second English album Oral Fixation Vol. 2 in 2006. "Hips Don't Lie" became a global success and was Shakira and Wyclef Jean's first (and to date, only) number-one single in the U.S. and the UK.

Song information

The song, a remake of "Dance Like This" (which Wyclef Jean and Juan G Ramirez had recorded for the Havana Nights soundtrack in 2004), appears only on the special edition of Oral Fixation Vol. 2. The song's introduction is an extracted from the song "Amores Como El Nuestro" by Jerry Rivera. The distinctive trumpet flourish was also previously heard on the song "Déjà Vu (Uptown Baby)" by Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz.

"Hips Don't Lie" debuted on the L.A.-based radio station KIIS-FM (on the Ryan Seacrest Morning Show) on February 14, 2006. Shakira and Wyclef Jean performed the song on the following TV shows: American Idol, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live With Regis and Kelly, The Today Show and Total Request Live. The song can be heard in the EA Sports video game MVP 06 NCAA Baseball, the film soundtrack to The Meltdown, and on MySpace records.

This is what Shakira says about the song "Hips Don't Lie" on her official website:

A Spanish version entitled "Será, Será (Las Caderas No Mienten)" was also released. This version is sung in Spanish, except for Wyclef Jean's rap part, which remains in English. Shakira also sang another version of "Hips Don't Lie" (called "The Bamboo Version") at the closing ceremony of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Chart performance

In February 2006, "Hips Don't Lie" was released to airplay in the United States. It entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100's top-forty in its fourth week on the chart and received the "greatest airplay gainer" title on the Hot 100 for three weeks in a row. The song achieved a peak position of #13 until it was released digitally on May 27, 2006. Shakira's record label Epic Records originally held back the release of the song's digital download to boost sales of Oral Fixation Vol. 2. When Epic finally chose to release the single digitally, the track hit #1 in the United Sates.

The single jumped from number nine to one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending June 17, 2006 due to the song's strong number-one status on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and nearly 267,000 downloads in its first week (the accomplishment broke D4L's record of 179,000 paid downloads). On the iTunes download chart, the song bumped Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" to #2 less than 24 hours after it was digitally released. Within 3 weeks the single managed to move over 670,000 paid digital downloads. The song debuted at number sixty-four on the Canadian BDS Airplay chart on April 13, 2006. It reached a peak position of #2, and is currently in the #4 position. So far, in the six weeks it has been digitally available, the song has sold close to 800,000 downloads.

According to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, "Hips Don't Lie" is the most-played pop song in American radio history, being played 9,637 times in a week, breaking Gwen Stefani's previous record with 9,582 plays in a week for her #1 hit single "Hollaback Girl" in 2005. Shakira also became the first artist ever to top the Billboard's Hot 100 chart and the Latin Singles chart simultaneously. The single held the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in a row, being dethroned on July 1 by "Do I Make You Proud" from American Idol Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks. Shakira gave a live performance of the single on the March 29 episode of the show.

Outside of the U.S., the song has been a successful worldwide hit. It climbed to #1 in Spain on April 22, 2006. The single was released on June 12,2006 in Australia where it had already become a popular radio hit allowing it to debut at #1 on the week of June 19. On May 19, 2006 the single became Shakira's second single to hit #1 in the World Music Charts, (it has stayed at #1 for nine weeks so far) after her 2001's smash single "Whenever, Wherever", where it stayed at the summit of the chart for twelve weeks.

"Hips Don't Lie" was officially released in the U.K. on June 12 as a physical single (it was digitally released on June 5) leading to an impressive leap from #53 to #3 on the Official UK's singles list. On 2nd July 2006, "Hips Don't Lie" became Shakira's first ever UK #1 and maintained its lead on the UK Urban singles chart (RnB/Hip-Hop) for a third week. Realising her number one success, she has told BBC Radio 1 that it was like a "dream crystal" to top the UK chart because of the heavy competitions and the demands of the British when it comes to music. Shakira is the third consecutive female artist to top the UK singles chart after Sandi Thom (the artist who knocked off Gnarls Barkley's nine-week reign at the top with "Crazy" after they stopped selling them) and Nelly Furtado. After one week ontop the UK singles chart it fell to #2 after being knocked off by Lily Allen's debut single Smile. It maintained its top spot on the UK Urban singles chart (RnB/Hip-Hop) for a fourth week. On July 12, 2006 "Hips Don't Lie", after spending three weeks at #2 on the UK Official Download Chart, the song jumped to #1 on the UK Official Download Chart and overtaking Nelly Furtado's four week stay with her single Maneater.

"Hips Don't Lie" is one of the most successful songs ever worldwide. It has already reached number one in the USA, UK, Australia, Ireland, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Sweden, New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, France, Spain, Philippines, Netherlands, Germany, Luxemburg, Poland, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Italy, Turkey, Slovakia, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Bulgaria, Norway, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Lebanon, Honduras, Belize, Iraq, Indonesia, and many other countries to date. It is one of the few songs in history to reach #1 in almost every charting country around the world.

"Hips Don't Lie" has failed to reach number one in four countries: Austria, Canada, Hungary, and Russia. However, it still performed well in these markets, reaching number two in all.

Music video

The music video was directed by British director Sophie Muller and filmed in Los Angeles, California, United States. While relatively plotless, the video presents Shakira and Wyclef Jean enjoying themselves as they dance in an arena-like environment. The majority of the costumes and outfits featured in the video belong to the Carnaval de Barranquilla, some of which include the white dress Shakira dances in, and the colorful flags.

"Hips Don't Lie" has proved successful on LAUNCHcast's top-hundred most-watched videos of the week, where it has spent eight consecutive weeks at number one. Yahoo! had fans submit videos of themselves dancing to the song, which were edited into a "fans only" version which has also proved to be one of the most popular videos on LAUNCH. The video for "Hips Don't Lie" had concurrently run in the #1 spot on iTunes (along with the single) for several weeks, the video has climed back to the number one spot while the song is now #4 behind Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man".Currently, it is the most-watched video of 2006, and has drawn close to two million streamed performances."Shakira to Perform 'Hips Don't Lie' with Wyclef Jean on American Idol".
