Heptachlor is an insecticide of empirical formula C10H5Cl7 that usually comes in the form of a white or tan powder, the tan powder being of lower purity. It is similar to insecticide chlordane. Heptachlor was widely used in the past to kill insects. In 1962, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring questioned the safety of heptachlor. The Environmental Protection Agency has banned the sale of heptachlor products in the United States and virtually eliminated its use for any purpose. Some heptachlor is still in the environment, and the amount that can be present in different foods is regulated.
