Nl-Hellendoorn.ogg is a municipality and a town in the centre of the Dutch province of Overijssel.
There is an amusement park Avonturenpark Hellendoorn.
Originally part of the quarter of Salland, Hellendoorn is now generally considered part of Twente, a fact reflected in Hellendoorn's inclusion in the Region of Twente (Kaderwetgebied Regio Twente) as defined by the Dutch government.
The town of Nijverdal is the commercial centre of the municipality. Its name actually meaning Industrious Valley. Nijverdal was founded over 150 years ago during the Industrial Revolution in the Netherlands. Thomas Ainsworth (1795-1841) being one of the founding fathers. The Textile industries - like the rest of the Twente region- was the main focus in Nijverdal. Some of the traditional factory buildings in the Art Deco or Jugendstil style remain. A small river called the Regge crosses through town. Nijverdal has app. 22.000 inhabitants.
During World War II Nijverdal was severely bombed by the allies (3/22/1945). The allied bombers actually thought they were over German enemy territory. Over 70 people were killed. A small part of the movie A Bridge Too Far was filmed near Hellendoorn.
