HEMP has run candidates (especially in Queensland and New South Wales)in Commonwealth Senate elections.

Long fronted by Nigel Freemarijuana, HEMP has never been successful in gaining a Senate quota.

The 9 October 2004 election was contested, in Queensland, by Guy Freemarijuana (Artist/Poet) and Tony Kneipp (Unemployed), to whom the Queensland Greens controversially directed their preferences. The NSW candidates were Michael Taylor Balderstone (Museum Curator) and Graham Lee Askey (Retired).
