HBOS plc is the holding company of the HBOS Group, formed on the 10 September 2001 by, and named after, the principals involved in the merger of Halifax plc, the former Halifax Building Society, with Bank of Scotland. HBOS's merger was notable in that it created a company of comparable size and stature to the established Big Four UK retail banks. The plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
